🚌 National School Bus Safety Week! 🚌

October 19–23 is National School Bus Safety Week, a reminder that keeping students safe on their way to and from school is everyone's responsibility.

Whether you're driving through a neighborhood, approaching a school bus stop, or traveling near a school, a little extra attention can make a big difference.

🚦 Know when to stop. When a school bus activates its red flashing lights, drivers must stop as required by Michigan law. Never pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing.

🟡 Watch for yellow flashing lights. These indicate the bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and be ready to stop.

🚸 Stay alert. Children can be unpredictable, especially when getting on or off a bus. Watch for students crossing the road or approaching bus stops.

📱 Avoid distractions. Put your phone away and keep your attention on the road, particularly during morning pickup and afternoon drop-off times.

🚗 Give buses plenty of space. Maintain a safe following distance and allow extra time when traveling near school buses.

Our officers want every student to arrive at school and return home safely. Please do your part by slowing down, staying alert, and following Michigan's school bus safety laws.

A few extra seconds of patience can help prevent a tragedy.

🚗 NATIONAL TEEN DRIVER SAFETY WEEK 🚦

Getting behind the wheel is an exciting milestone for teens, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. National Teen Driver Safety Week is an opportunity to remind young drivers that developing safe driving habits now can make a difference for years to come.

Whether you're a new driver or have been driving for a while, a few important reminders:

🚘 Buckle up. Every seat, every trip, every time.

📱 Put the phone away. Texts, notifications and social media can wait.

🚦 Slow down. Follow posted speed limits and adjust your speed for road and weather conditions.

👥 Limit distractions. Passengers, loud music and other distractions can take your attention away from the road.

🚫 Never drive impaired. Alcohol, drugs and driving don't mix.

Parents and guardians: Your involvement matters! Talk with your teen about safe driving, establish clear expectations and lead by example when you're behind the wheel.

Safe driving isn't just about passing a driving test. It's about making responsible decisions every time you get behind the wheel.

💙 CELEBRATING TWO REMARKABLE CAREERS 💙

After decades of dedicated service, Officer Gregory Willshire and Officer Russell Mazarka are retiring from the Kentwood Police Department, marking the conclusion of two remarkable careers in law enforcement.

Officer Willshire retires after 27 years with the Kentwood Police Department, while Officer Mazarka concludes a 33-year career in law enforcement, including 26 years serving the Kentwood community.

Throughout their careers, both officers have taken on numerous specialized roles and responsibilities, contributing their knowledge, experience, and dedication to many different areas of law enforcement. Their work has played an important role in the department's growth and success, while their experience and expertise have been invaluable to those who have worked alongside them.

But a career in law enforcement is about much more than the assignments held or the years spent wearing the uniform. It's about the people they've helped, the relationships they've built, the challenges they've faced, and the lasting impressions they've made on those around them.

Together, these two officers represent 53 years of combined service to the Kentwood Police Department. More than five decades of commitment, countless experiences, and contributions that will continue to influence our department long after their final shifts.

As they close this chapter, we recognize not only their years of service, but the lasting impact they've made on our department and the community. Their experience, dedication, and presence will certainly be missed.

Officer Willshire and Officer Mazarka, thank you for your service, your sacrifices, and the many ways you've made a difference throughout your careers.

From all of us at the Kentwood Police Department, congratulations on your well-deserved retirements! We wish you both happiness, good health, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy everything this next chapter has to offer. 💙

🚨 SCAM ALERT | THAT RANDOM “HI” TEXT

Have you ever received a text from an unfamiliar number that simply says “Hi,” “Hey,” or something like “Is this Jessica?”

It might seem harmless, but that message could be the beginning of a scam. Scammers often send these messages hoping you'll respond. They may pretend to have the wrong number, act like they know you or try to strike up a friendly conversation. Their goal is to gain your trust and keep you engaged.

From there, they may attempt to obtain personal information, ask for money or send links and attachments designed to steal information, compromise accounts or trick you into downloading malicious software.

Here's how to protect yourself:

• Don't respond to suspicious messages from unfamiliar numbers, even just to ask who it is.
• Don't click unexpected links or open suspicious attachments, including photos or files.
• Never share personal or financial information with someone you don't know.
• Block the sender and report the message as junk or spam.

Remember: Not every scam starts with an urgent demand or an obvious threat. Sometimes, it starts with a simple “Hi.”

💚 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY | OCTOBER 10

Mental health challenges don't always look the way we expect them to, and we don't always know what someone else is going through.

Whether you're struggling yourself, concerned about someone you care about, or simply looking for information, knowing where to turn for support can make a difference.

World Mental Health Day serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, understanding and making sure people know that support is available.

With that in mind, we've included a resource guide featuring a few options for crisis and urgent mental health support.

HOW MUCH DOES ALL THAT GEAR WEIGH?

We’re back with another answer from Friday Night Roll Call! One of the questions you submitted was how much an officer’s gear actually weighs. Officer Stewart agreed to help us find out, even if the Facebook part took a little convincing.

Without gear: 143.4 lbs.
With gear: 167.6 lbs.
That’s 24.2 pounds of gear.

The total weight can vary slightly from officer to officer, but for Officer Stewart, her gear added 24.2 pounds.... is that more or less than you expected?

WALK & ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY 👟🎒

This morning, two of our officers joined students and staff from one of our Kentwood schools for Walk & Roll to School Day!

Walk & Roll to School Day encourages students to walk or bike to school while promoting pedestrian and bicycle safety and reminding drivers to stay alert for students traveling to and from school.

Our officers enjoyed walking alongside the group, talking with students and spending some time with our school community along the way.

Thanks for letting us join you this morning, we had a great time! 💙
