Challenge yourself to a thru-hike between Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park (or vice versa) and let the Sugar Shuttle do the driving.

The free shuttle is running this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10 and 11, between Hood Mountain’s Los Alamos Road entrance (in Santa Rosa) and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park (in Kenwood). We recommend riding the shuttle first, then hiking back to your car. The one-way hike is about 7.5 miles with 2,500 feet of elevation gain and takes about 4 to 5 hours.

Reservations are required at SugarloafPark.org/SugarShuttle
The Sugar Shuttle is operated by our partners Team Sugarloaf/Sonoma Ecology
Center

[Traducido al español debajo] What's Shakin' at Sugarloaf? Oak woodlands are dynamic habitats, constantly changing, though head out on Saturday's Habitat Hike and you'll hardly notice. Beneath the ancient oaks, time slows. Sunlight filters through a leaf mosaic, golden grasses ripple with the breeze and even the rocks release their stories. Come explore wild California at its best in this living landscape.

In SSSeptember, we had the pleasssure of an outing with the one and only, Galen Freed-Wilhem! Galen gave us a presentation on the variety of Sonoma County reptiles, including snakes, turtles, lizards, and others. After the talk, we ventured out on a somewhat-warmer-than-expected day, which did not yield as many sightings as expected, but Galen is an excellent guide: he found a Western Forest Scorpion, a California Slender Salamander, and a Northern Pacific Rattlesnake. The group also came across many lizards with beautiful and varied patterns on their back, as well as a vacated quail nest.

This event was part of California Biodiversity Day, which celebrates the spectacular ecological richness of the State and promotes its conservation. Our iNaturalist project only has a handful of observations, some of them expected, and some unexpected! You can view it at https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/2026-ca-biodiversity-day-sugarloaf-ridge-sp
