Today the crew of Engine 16 was working with a member of their crew on driver/operator training. Our firefighters practiced pumping water to the ladder truck to flow its aerial master stream.

Training on these operations helps our crews build the skills and coordination needed to deliver large volumes of water from above when fighting fires.

At Kernersville Fire Rescue, we’re committed to continuous training to ensure we’re ready when our community needs us most!

Please keep our fellow brothers and their families in your prayers.

Durham Fire Department Announces the Line-of-Duty Death of Firefighter Andrew Brokes

DURHAM, N.C. - It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that the Durham Fire Department announces the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Andrew Brokes, age 24.

On Thursday, October 8, 2026, at approximately 3:15 a.m., a 911 call reported a fire at 410 Marly Dr., Durham. Firefighter Brokes was battling a structure fire and sustained fatal injuries while searching for victims inside the fire building.

Firefighter Brokes joined the Durham Fire Department in May 2025 and was assigned to Fire Station 13 on Tower Company 5. He was a dedicated public servant who served the City of Durham with honor, courage, and integrity.

"This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community," said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family's privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way."

The Durham Fire Department appreciates the assistance provided today by their fellow public safety agencies including the Durham Police Department, Durham County Fire Marshal’s Office, Durham County Emergency Medical Services, Durham County Sheriff's Office, Durham City/County Emergency Management, Emergency Chaplains, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives, City of Raleigh Fire Department, Town of Cary Fire Department, North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Last week several members of Kernersville Fire Rescue attended an Urban Rigging and Rescue class in Arvada, CO.

This course was a 3-day hands-on training geared towards advanced and diverse rope rescue operations in the urban setting. Buildings, bridges, towers, and manufacturing facilities are commonplace in these environments, and each pose their own unique access challenges. Rescuers must be able to evaluate risk, climb, build systems, and appropriately rescue injured or trapped parties from these environments.

This class had a large focus on personal rope skills, aid climbing, and small-team rescue technicues.
