NOAA Ship FAIRWEATHER's previous project had the ship working hard to support the Arctic Mooring Cruise led by the Ecosystems & Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (or EcoFOCI), program and partner Marine Mammal Lab. This type of cruise was a first for the FAIRWEATHER team!

Our combined crew and science team successfully deployed essential oceanographic moorings to help monitor the US Arctic's dynamic marine environments. This project involved recovering and deploying a series of instruments chained together with a float, requiring teamwork and creativity. Learn more about the the work here: https://videos.fisheries.noaa.gov/detail/video/6321062496112/ecofoci:-forecasting-fisheries-in-a-warming-alaska?autoStart=true&q=ecosystems

The ship is proud to support this ongoing mission to gather critical oceanographic and marine megafauna information in the Arctic. A big shout out to NOAA Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research's Global Ocean Monitoring and Observing (GOMO) Program and Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) and NOAA Fisheries Service.

Today, FAIRWEATHER stopped to honor and pay respects to Able Seaman Eric Koss, west of Point Elrington in Prince William Sound at Koss Cove.

On August 13, 2002, NOAA Ship RAINIER's survey launch capsized after being struck by high waves, killing Koss and leaving the two remaining crew members in the surf to swim to shore.

This tragedy still reverberates throughout our work everyday, and is in the forefront of our minds during every safety briefing, every job hazard analysis, and every training qualification earned.

Safe navigation is the heart of our hydrographic work, so that all mariners can make it to the next port.

From the Chukchi Sea, a brief stop over in Dutch Harbor to unload ship supplies, through the Western Inside Passage, the ship arrived at Zachar Bay on the Western side of Kodiak Island.

Here, the ship deployed all of the small boats to “shake down” survey and engineering systems for a day prior to our next project in Prince William Sound.

Do you know how many small boats FAIRWEATHER has aboard at any given time?

NOAA in the Bering!

Did you know that NOAA Ship Fairweather, NOAA Ship Oscar Dyson, and NOAA Ship Bell M Shimada all had projects in the Bering Sea during the 2026 Field Season?

During FAIRWEATHER's final project in the Bering, one of NOAA's four Twin Otters, tail number N46RF, did a fly over! What a special way to close out several projects in the Bering.

A recent joint operation between NOAA Ship Fairweather and U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Cypress identified a navigation channel in Bechevin Bay, Alaska.

Fairweather’s specialized survey capabilities and operational expertise, combined with Cypress’ local knowledge of the waterway enabled the interagency team to quickly and efficiently map the channel and determine best placement of new channel markers.
