The Kewanee Police Department would like to help spread the word about the upcoming Memorial Walk/Run in memory of C**t Tossel, being held on October 10th at 10:00 a.m. at Windmont Park.

The organizers of the event recently reached out to KPD after seeing one of our posts highlighting an individual who is successfully overcoming addiction. They initially expressed interest in supporting our DAART program. Because DAART is currently well funded, we were able to connect them with several outstanding local organizations that directly assist individuals and families affected by addiction and substance use.

The organizers ultimately chose to support Perfectly Flawed, a great organization that serves as an entry point for individuals and families seeking help with issues related to substance use.

We are grateful to the organizers for turning the memory of a loved one into an opportunity to support others in our community who may be facing similar struggles. Events like this help raise awareness, bring people together, and remind those battling addiction that support and resources are available.

We encourage anyone who is able to come out on October 10th, honor C**t’s memory, and support a great cause.

Since September 27 the Kewanee Police Department has investigated two stolen vehicles within the city. In both incidents, the vehicles were left unlocked with the keys inside. One vehicle was stolen overnight, while the other was taken during the daytime.

Both vehicles have since been recovered. One was located in Kewanee, and the other was recovered in a neighboring community.

These incidents serve as an important reminder to always lock your vehicle and remove the keys, even if you are only leaving it unattended for a short period of time. Residents are also encouraged to remove valuables from their vehicles whenever possible. If valuables must be left inside, they should be kept out of plain sight.

Simple precautions can significantly reduce the opportunity for vehicle theft and other crimes of opportunity.

The Kewanee Police Department also asks residents to remain alert and report suspicious activity. If you see someone checking vehicle doors, looking into parked vehicles, entering vehicles that do not appear to belong to them, or engaging in other suspicious behavior, please contact the Kewanee Police Department at (309)853-1911.

For emergencies call 911.

The Kewanee Police Department appreciates the community’s assistance in helping keep Kewanee safe.

We appreciate West Central Illinois ROSC and Hill Church for bringing people together and continuing to spread a message of hope, recovery, and community support.

Recovery Starts with a Decision

For several years, Holden struggled with substance abuse and had multiple interactions with law enforcement. Eventually, he made the decision that he wanted something different for himself and his family.

And then he did the hard part, he followed through.

Holden participated in Henry County Drug Court and the Kewanee Police Department’s Drug and Alcohol Addiction Response Team (DAART), taking advantage of resources available in our community to help him move forward. Today, Holden has been sober from he**in since August 12, 2025, and from methamphetamine since January 30, 2026. He has a reliable and steady job, is taking care of his son, and continues working toward the life he chose to build.

Programs and resources can open doors, provide support, and help someone find a path toward recovery but they cannot walk that path for them.

Holden did that.

His success belongs to him. It came from his determination, his willingness to accept help, and his decision to keep working toward a better life even when doing so was difficult.

Many of the staff members at the Kewanee Police Department have known Holden for years and have seen both the struggles he faced and the progress he has made. We are proud of what he has accomplished and, more importantly, of the determination he continues to show in building a better life for himself and his son.

Holden gave us permission to share his story and told us he hopes that by doing so, it might help save someone else’s life. Holden’s story is just one example. There are others in our community who have made similar changes, are maintaining their recovery, rebuilding their lives, and thriving because they were willing to take that first step.

For anyone currently struggling with substance abuse, help is available. Through our participation in the WISE Deflection Initiative, the Kewanee Police Department Drug and Alcohol Addiction Response Team (DAART), and our relationship with Henry County Drug Court, we can help connect people with treatment, support, and other resources that can help begin the recovery process.

The path is yours to walk, but you do not have to find it alone.

We can help you get started.

Holden’s story is proof that change is possible, and with determination, support, and a willingness to keep moving forward, a different future can be built for anyone ready to start.

If you or someone you know is interested in recovery programs, resources, or support, please reach out to the Kewanee Police Department at 309-853-1911, or contact [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], or any Kewanee Police Department officer or dispatcher you feel comfortable speaking with. You can also contact the WISE Deflection Initiative directly at [email protected] for assistance connecting with available services and support.

We can also help connect individuals and families dealing with mental health concerns to local resources and support. If you are unsure where to turn, reach out and we will do our best to help connect you with the appropriate services.

Sometimes the first step is simply reaching out.
