When using extension cords outside to complete yard work, be sure to plug into a ground fault circuit interrupter or portable GFCI. Do not overload the cords or allow them to run through water on the ground. The appliance or tool that you are using the cord with will have a wattage rating on it. Match this up with your extension cord, and do not use a cord that has a lower rating: https://www.esfi.org/extension-cord-safety-tips/

REPORT STREETLIGHT OUTAGES BEFORE HALLOWEEN

With trick-or-treating right around the corner, Keys Energy Services (KEYS) wants to make sure families can see clearly, and drivers can see trick-or-treaters, to make Halloween festivities safe for children of all ages. KEYS’ customers are urged to contact KEYS to report any burned out, malfunctioning, or 24-hour burning streetlights so they can be repaired prior to October 31. Customers can submit their request online at KeysEnergy.com/customer-service-requests or by calling (305) 295-1010.

When contacting KEYS, customers are asked to have the following information to help expedite repairs:
- The street address of the home or business closest to the streetlight in question.
- The streetlight pole number – a bright yellow number affixed at eye level on the street side of the pole.
- Determine whether the light is burned out (not lit during dusk and/or evening hours), malfunctioning (flickering), or 24-hour burning (lit 24-hours a day).

“KEYS maintains streetlights at the request of the City of Key West and Monroe County,” said KEYS’ General Manager & CEO Lynne Tejeda. She added that, “we make every effort to identify and repair malfunctioning or burned-out streetlights in a timely manner to assure public safety for all, especially during a busy holiday that children love.”

KEYS WARNS CUSTOMERS OF LOCAL PHONE SCAM

Keys Energy Services (KEYS) has been made aware of several customers receiving scam phone calls involving their electric accounts.

As part of the scam, customers are informed a payment is immediately due on their electric account or they will have their service disconnected for nonpayment. Customers are then pressured to pay by phone using a credit or prepaid debit card to avoid an interruption in service. Well-informed individuals have prevented fraud from being perpetrated, but all KEYS’ customers are advised to remain vigilant to avoid falling victim to the scam.

“If customers are unsure of the authenticity of a call and need to verify its legitimacy, they should hang up and directly contact KEYS at (305) 295-1000 to speak with a Customer Services representative,” said Lynne Tejeda, KEYS’ General Manager & CEO. She went on to add that, “at that time our representatives can check the status of their account and verify their account information.”

KEYS EMPLOYEES WRAP UP PUBLIC POWER WEEK WITH UNITED WAY

Keys Energy Services (KEYS) brought its Public Power Week celebrations to a close by championing local community spirit through a successful partnership with the United Way of Collier and the Keys' Feed the Keys food drive.

Throughout the week, KEYS’ Service Building in Key West served as a collection site for non-perishable food items donated by generous customers and employees. To cap off the week, KEYS’ employees volunteered at the collection hub, assisting with collecting, sorting, and weighing the food brought in by the community-wide event to help restock local food pantries.

“Public Power Week highlights the unique value that community-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities bring to their service areas,” said Lynne Tejeda, General Manager & CEO. “For KEYS, wrapping up the week with hands-on support for the United Way underscored the utility's ongoing commitment to strengthening the Florida Keys community,” she continued.

KEYS’ Days of Giving program connects employees with nonprofit organizations throughout the Lower Florida Keys to provide hands-on support for community projects and events.
