Each week, staff from the library recommend favorites from the collection for the Shelf Help feature in the Keys Weekly newspapers. This recommendation of "The Land and Its People" by David Sedaris comes from Anne Rice, assistant director of support services:

"David Sedaris feels like an old friend — arriving for a dinner party delightfully eccentric with a fresh batch of stories to keep you laughing long past bedtime. In the audiobook of 'The Land and Its People,' the self-contained chapters made it easy to listen in short stretches, though I kept finding excuses to start one more.

"His recollections and musings had me laughing out loud, often at moments I wouldn’t have expected (death, abusive families, betrayal). While the live audience audio felt uneven at times, hearing the room respond added to the feeling of being in his company.

"When 'The Land and Its People' ended, I felt unexpectedly glum, like returning to an empty apartment after seeing off a treasured houseguest."

This week's recommendation of "Wolf Worm" by T. Kingfisher comes from Riona Campbell, senior branch manager at the Key West Library branch:

"If T. Kingfisher writes it, I will read it. I am obsessed with how Kingfisher renders her narrators’ inner worlds and 'Wolf Worm' is no different. Sonia is an accomplished illustrator, struggling to find consistent and fulfilling work after the death of her father. She leaves a steady but underwhelming job as a teacher, moving to the remote North Carolina woods. She begins illustrating Dr. Halder’s expansive and creepy insect collection for his upcoming publication. Yet there are far more sinister things lurking in the surrounding woods. Sonia is isolated and unsure who to trust, what is real, and if she will survive."

Each week, staff from the library recommend a favorite from the collection for the Reel Recs feature in the Keys Weekly newspapers. This week's recommendation of "It's Dorothy!" comes from Community Affairs Manager Nancy Klingener:

"In L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,' Dorothy Gale is not physically described, except for being 8 or 9 years old. Since then, she has contained multitudes, most indelibly Judy Garland’s portrayal in the 1939 movie. This documentary investigates that role, and Garland’s subsequent importance for the gay community especially, but also many more recent interpretations on page, stage, and screen, from 'The Wiz' to 'Wicked.' One person describes 'The Wizard of Oz' as 'the only big pop culture property that’s been around for every generation that’s alive right now' – a really striking way of recognizing its longevity, impact, and adaptability. We all have our own relationships with Dorothy and her journey. No single documentary could capture everyone’s, but this film illuminates a lot of them and introduces you to how many others have perceived this story, which is both entirely American and somehow universal at the same time."

This week's recommendation of "Our Infinite Fates" by Laura Steven comes from Jessica Penepent, senior library assistant at the Big Pine Key Library branch:

"Two souls, tethered together, are reincarnated over and over and are able to remember their past lives. They’ve fallen in love in many lifetimes, but kill each other in every single one. This book weaves between the modern-day dilemma where the main character tries to stay alive to save her sister and back in time to the past lives they’ve experienced. What a ride and what a concept! I couldn’t stop reading. I loved the different places and times the book travels to and experiencing how they were reincarnated each time, their relationships, and how it played out. Fun to read and easily made my list of top books I’ve read this year."

This week's recommendation of the 2008 mini-series adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility" comes from Community Affairs Manager Nancy Klingener:

"Emma Thompson won an Oscar for writing the screenplay of the 2005 film version of Jane Austen’s debut novel. But for all that film’s merits, and hers, she was just too old to play Elinor Dashwood. Which is why I was delighted when Andrew Davies, the writer behind the iconic BBC version of 'Pride and Prejudice,' took on this story in a three-part series. Every cast member is terrific, from Hattie Morahan as Elinor to the great Janet McTeer as Mrs. Dashwood. Dan Stevens, of 'Downton Abbey' fame, is just right as love interest Edward Ferrars and so is Dominic Cooper as the disastrously charming Willoughby. Three episodes lets the story breathe without demanding a longterm commitment. I’d watch the Emma Thompson version again if it popped up on my screen, but this is the one I return to as a reliable comfort watch."
