TRAFFIC REMINDER & ENFORCEMENT NOTICE – S. MINERAL STREET

The Mineral County Sheriff’s Department has recently received numerous complaints regarding the improper use of the center turn lane on S. Mineral Street (US 220), between Lincoln Street and Pine Swamp Road.

We would like to remind motorists that the center lane in this area is designated for left turns and is not to be used as a merge lane, travel lane, or passing lane.

West Virginia State Code §17C-7-9(a)(2) states:

“Upon a roadway which is divided into three lanes a vehicle shall not be driven in the center lane which is clearly marked as a left turn lane except in preparation for a left turn or where such center lane is at the time allocated exclusively to traffic moving in the direction the vehicle is proceeding and is signposted to give notice of such allocation.”

In other words, motorists should not pull into the center turn lane and use it to merge into the regular flow of traffic or to pass other vehicles. The lane should only be entered when preparing for a left turn.

⚠️ Please be aware that deputies will be monitoring this area and enforcing violations of the center turn lane. Citations may be issued for improper use.

Under §17C-7-9(b), a violation is a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, carries a fine of up to $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second conviction within one year, and $500 for a third or subsequent conviction.

Our goal is not simply to issue citations, but to address the complaints we are receiving and, most importantly, help prevent crashes. We ask everyone traveling S. Mineral Street to use the center turn lane properly and be considerate of other motorists.

Thank you for doing your part to help keep our roadways safe.

🇺🇸 Mineral County Sheriff's Department Proud to Support Relay for America 🇺🇸

The Mineral County Sheriff's Department was honored to assist with Relay for America as runners carried the American flag through Mineral County on its journey to Washington, D.C.

Lt. Reall escorted the runners through Mineral County in his patrol vehicle to help ensure their safety along the route. During the relay in Fort Ashby, one of the Relay for America participants passed the American flag to Sgt. Wilson, who proudly carried it through the next segment of the relay.

Relay for America is a coast-to-coast relay celebrating America's 250th birthday by carrying one American flag more than 3,000 miles while honoring 3,000 American veterans and bringing communities together across the nation.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support this inspiring event and thank the runners, volunteers, and organizers for allowing Mineral County to be part of this historic journey.

We wish everyone involved a safe finish as the flag arrives in our nation's capital for Independence Day.
