Colington Volunteer Fire Department

Colington Volunteer Fire Department This was quite a broad geographical area to cover, so in 1971, a station was built to meet the needs of the growing number of residents in Colington.

The Mission of the Colington Volunteer Fire Department is to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors to the Colington community through the efficient delivery of fire protection, basic medical and life safety services. Originally, Colington Fire Department was a district of the Kitty Hawk Volunteer Fire Department, which at that time responded to fires in the villages of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk and Colington. In 1981, due to tremendous growth in the community, the Colington Volunteer Fire Department was formed and a state charter was granted in 1982. Since that time, what was once a small, dedicated group of individuals with minimal equipment is now a combination Fire Rescue agency employing 9 full time staff and over 25 volunteers with modern apparatus and equipment. A Board of Directors protects the financial interests of the department, in cooperation with Dare County. The CVFD is quite busy. Our base is made up of a strong group of volunteer and career personnel protecting the most populated unincorporated area in the county. As of the 2014 census, Colington had a population of 4,179 residents. While we are primarily supported by a fire tax district, we also obtain additional funding through fundraisers and weekly BINGO. Bingo is held every Wednesday. Doors open at 5:30 and play begins at 6:30 so come out and support us!

It's a bittersweet day at the fire station. Firefighter JP Kovacs is finishing his last shift with us today. He's accepted a position with the Chapel Hill Fire Department and starts that chapter in his career Monday. JP started as a volunteer Cadet with us then worked for Dare County EMS before becoming one of our career guys. He has been a consistent team player for our department and community. While we hate to see him go, we're all proud of his accomplishments and appreciate his dedication to the department and the Colington community.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on the simple steps people can take to recharge safely. Safe charging means making smart choices every time you plug in.

Many devices used in our daily lives - phones, tablets, laptops, tools, toys, e-bikes, and scooters—run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which store a lot of energy in a small space. If they are damaged or charged the wrong way, they can overheat, start a fire, or even explode.

Our second annual Fire Truck Pull is Saturday, October 10th at the Dare Centre. We still have a few spots left for teams to compete. It's a lot of fun, and we are splitting the proceeds with Beach Food Pantry.

Of course, there is no charge to watch so come out and root for your favorite team as they pull a 30,000-pound fire truck across the parking lot! We ask you bring a non-perishable food item to support the efforts of Beach Food Pantry.
