To promote early detection, honor survivors, support caregivers and families, and to remember those lost to the disease, the board of supervisors officially proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in King George during their regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

The board also extended their deepest gratitude to the dedicated healthcare professionals and facilities, including Mary Washington Hospital and other local centers across the county and the region, for their compassionate care and commitment to King George residents.

May this month serve as a reminder of the community's strength, resilience, and unwavering support for one another.

The King George County Board of Supervisors and Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), reached a mutual agreement regarding AWS’s planned $6 billion investment to establish a data center campus in King George’s Route 3 (Kings Highway) west settlement area. With this agreement, the county recognizes AWS has vested rights to repurpose the former property of Birchwood Power Facility, a coal power plant, and to develop other nearby industrial-zoned properties owned by the company. However, AWS made a binding commitment to not construct data center buildings on land adjacent to the Rappahannock River.

During the Tuesday, Sept. 15, meeting, the King George County Board of Supervisors proudly presented a proclamation recognizing World Duchenne Awareness Day in support of individuals and families affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).

DMD is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting roughly 1 in 5,000 live male births. It causes progressive muscle weakness, impacting heart and lung function. About 35% of cases occur through random spontaneous mutations—meaning it can affect any family. While treatments can help manage symptoms, there is currently no cure. Because it is a rare disease, raising awareness is one of the greatest tools for promoting the discovery of a cure.

All residents are encouraged to learn more about and support those impacted by the disease, including local advocates like the Lippold family who started a non-profit Beyond the Pavement inspired by their own experiences with the disease.

More info on their organization can be found at beyondthepavement.org.

The proclamation in its entirety can be read at kinggeorgecountyva.gov/DocumentCenter/View/28994/Duchenne-Proclamation.
