16-year-old male and 19-year-old male dead; 4 others with life-threatening injuries in Tuscola County crash

Caro Post troopers are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred about 1:30 a.m. on 9/5/26 on Deckerville Rd. near Plain Rd. in Ellington Twp., Tuscola County.

Preliminary investigation indicates that three cars were involved in the crash. A westbound 2018 Dodge Charger attempted to pass a westbound 2002 Chevrolet Silverado when the Charger struck the Silverado then an oncoming 2020 Chevrolet Equinox. The head-on crash entangled all three cars and resulted in the Charger catching fire.

A 19-year-old Millington man, the driver of the Charger and 16-year-old Vassar boy, a passenger of the Charger sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased on scene.

Two additional passengers, a 19-year-old Clio man and an 18-year-old Clio man, in the Charger sustained serious life-threatening injuries. The Silverado's driver, a 19-year-old Deford man, sustained serious life-threatening injuries and the passenger, a 19-year-old Croswell man, had non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Equinox, a 19-year-old Sandusky woman, sustained life-threatening injuries. All were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment.

This incident remains under investigation. Any additional factors, such as speed or alcohol, remain undetermined at this time.

Troopers were assisted on scene by Tuscola County Sheriff's Office, Kingston Police Department, Caro Police Department, Caro Fire Department, and MMR.

This tragic traffic crash reinforces the need for all motorists to make safe choices behind the wheel. Slow down, stay alert, and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Safe decisions save lives.

The Michigan State Police extends its deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones affected by this traffic crash. We also recognize the impact this event has on the Thumb community and encourage residents to support one another.

On 8/21/26 at 1429hrs, Tuscola County Central Dispatch received a call of a crash on Froede Rd near Silvernail Rd. The caller advised a pickup truck had struck a tree and the driver was pinned inside. Sgt. Broecker, Dep. Webster, and Dep. Woods responded to the scene. Kingston Fire Department and Caro Fire Department, along with MMR also responded. A Life Flight helicopter was dispatched but was forced to turn back due to a mechanical failure of the aircraft. Once on scene, firefighters and Law Enforcement officers began attempts to extricate the driver. Due to the severity of the crash and the extreme disfigurement of the vehicle, it took over an hour to fully extricate the driver. The 17 year old Kingston man was transported by MMR to Covenant in Saginaw
with serious injuries. Initial investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling northbound on Froede when it left the roadway to
the right and struck a culvert, causing the vehicle to go airborne. The vehicle landed and struck a tree. It is unknown at this time why the vehicle left the roadway. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Kingston Fire / Kingston Police, Caro Fire, MMR, and Bullet Towing.
