UPDATE: Firefighters found no fire at Richard Gordon Elementary School after a fire alarm was activated this afternoon. Students returned to class once crews cleared the building. The smoke inside and outside the building is believed to have come from outdoor burning in the area.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews arrived in less than five minutes and searched the building, finding no evidence of fire inside. Units from Bainbridge Island Fire Department and Poulsbo Fire Department also responded.

Thank you to school staff and students for a quick, safe evacuation.

A passerby's 911 call helped crews stop a fire off Orseth Road NE early this morning. No one was injured.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched at 1:37 a.m. after a caller on Miller Bay Road reported seeing heavy smoke. Firefighters arrived about six minutes later to find a 100-by-20-foot fire burning through large woody debris and a piece of heavy equipment. Crews stopped the fire's forward progress by 2:11 a.m. and remained on scene for a couple more hours mopping up.

Six NKF&R units responded. With no hydrants in the area, two water tenders shuttled about 13,000 gallons of water to the scene.

The fire destroyed a large commercial tub grinder. An investigator from the Kitsap County Fire Marshal's Office also responded, and the cause is under investigation.

Thank you to the person who stopped to call it in. If you see unexpected smoke or flames, don't assume someone else has already reported it; call 911.

A Stage One outdoor burn ban is now in effect in Kitsap County following recent rainfall. Please see the post below from our friends at the Kitsap County - Government for more information.

A Stage One outdoor burn ban is in effect Friday, September 4th, in Kitsap County. The move from Stage Two ban to Stage One follows recent rainfall and lowered risk of fire spread.

Burn permits are still suspended.

Only cooking and small recreational fires are allowed.

Recreational fires must be:
• Three feet or less in diameter
• Made of charcoal or firewood
• At least 25 feet from structures or combustibles
• Attended by a responsible adult with water or a shovel on hand

Fires must be fully extinguished — soaked and cool to the touch — before being left unattended. No permit is required for recreational fires.
This ban is coordinated with the Kitsap County Fire Chiefs Association.
