Stranger Than Fiction: Root System Architecture Thursday, Oct 15 • 6:30pm

A new monthly discussion group where we learn about strange and fascinating ideas in the world of science!

This month we’ll be reading about advancements in the study of plant root systems. In modern times, root properties such as morphology and root system architecture (RSA) have been recognized as increasingly important traits for creating more and higher quality food in the “Second Green Revolution”. To address the paucity in RSA and other root research, new technologies are being investigated to fill the increasing demand to improve plants via root traits and overcome currently stagnated genetic progress in stable yields.

You can pick up the reading beforehand at the Circulation Desk.

Graphic Novel Book Club: The Mythology Class Saturday, October 10 • 3pm

We’re partnering with our friends at World’s End Comics for a new book club! Whether you’re a seasoned fan or new to the format, dive into the vibrant world of graphic novels – where stunning visuals meet compelling narratives.

In October we’ll be reading The Mythology Class by Arnold Arre

Nicole Lacson is an anthropology student at the University of the Philippines. When she is summoned to a secret meeting by the mysterious Madame Enkanta, Nicole finds herself face-to-face with living creatures from mythology and folklore that she never imagined existed in real life! Tikblangs, kapres and a range of engkantos --fantasy figures from her grandfather's bedtime stories--challenge her previously-held notions of reality.

No registration needed. Note that this event is held at World’s End Comics – 319 Wall Street.

Buy a copy at the shop (10% discount), or check it out from the library!

AMERICA: SONGS OF PATRIOTISM, PRAISE, and PROTEST Tuesday, October 6 • 6pm

A Cello Show with Alex Prizgintas

America’s democracy is based upon the freedoms of speech and religion as part of its cornerstone. Alex Prizgintas presents Patriotism, Praise, and Protest as part of the vital fabric that weaves our differences into our distinct strength. He'll perform key hymns, noble anthems of patriotism, and tunes of solidarity as well as resistance that celebrate the history of our union.

Those familiar with Alex's work on the cello might be surprised to learn that he graduated summa cm laude with an undergraduate degree in regional history from Marist College and a graduate degree from Marist in public administration, in addition to serving as president of the Woodbury Historical Society and town historian of Woodbury in Orange County, NY. “I tend to have two audiences: those who know me as a cellist and those who know me through my lectures on topics of regional history. My bifurcated interests certainly keep me busy developing new stories to share about our Hudson River Valley as well as expanding my concert programs that strive to keep audiences engaged, enlightened, and hopefully entertained.”
