Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency Promote sustainable practices & efficiently manage solid waste with a focus on resource conservation.

In 1986, the Ulster County Legislature obtained authorization from the State Legislature for the creation of the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (the "Agency"), a public benefit corporation which was formed for the purpose of developing, financing, and implementing a comprehensive Countywide solid waste management program. In the mid-1980's, after new initiatives to close non-complying existing landfills were undertaken by the NYSDEC and strict requirements for the siting, construction, and operation of new disposal facilities were enacted, many communities found it beyond their financial and managerial capability to continue to dispose of waste in traditional ways. Consequently, many of the local municipalities in Ulster County requested that the Ulster County government assumed the responsibility for solid waste management, and the Agency was created by the New York State Legislature pursuant to Chapter 936 of the Public Authorities Law approved December of 1986. The Agency's organizational structure consists of a five-member Board of Directors; an Executive Director; Agency Counsel; a seven-member management team; forty administrative and operations personnel; and engineering consultants on an as needed basis.

98% of textiles can be reused or recycled, but only about 16% are currently being recovered.

If you're digging through your closet for Halloween costumes this month, remember to consider textile recycling as another great option to swapping and donating old unwanted costumes!

Even ripped, stained, or unwearable textiles that are not suitable for resale are likely acceptable for recycling.

In NYS, many of the companies that sponsor clothing bins for reuse also have well established practices to recover and recycle any damaged or unsaleable fabrics, and they may even get paid for the recycling value of these textiles as well!

Unless expressly stated on the collection bins, most clothing donation boxes you find out in the community can accept damaged and stained fabrics, too, as long as the fabric is not wet, moldy, bloody, or corrupted by other spooky pests.

So here's to making the impact from our wardrobe a little less scary - and for small acts that can make a big difference!

Thank you to Julie Noble and Radio Kingston for a thoughtful discussion on food scrap recycling and the amazing efforts involved to bring Kingston Organics to Phase II Curbside Collection for city of Kingston residents! We especially appreciated the opportunity to highlight what happens after collection, as UCRRA processes the material into compost right here in Ulster County.

If you live in the City of Kingston or know someone who does, this is certainly worth a listen. Then let us know what questions you have. Our team is always happy to answer them here, by email, or over the phone.

♻️🌱 Turning food scraps into a resource is a community effort, and conversations like this help make it possible.

This week marks the first time that participating Kingston City residents can put their green gallon buckets on the sidewalk for the food scraps collection service, which began on October 5th. Julie Noble, the city’s Sustainability Coordinator stopped by Middays with Julia to talk about […]

This month, we're spotlighting the Town of Esopus Transfer Station as part of our new MRDC Series!

MRDCs are "Municipal Recycling Drop Off Centers" and nearly every Town in Ulster County has one!

Did you know that these facilities offer an alternative to curbside collection, that is a convenient and low-cost way of managing your household trash and recyclables?

Many of these facilities are considered a "one stop shop" because of all the additional items they may accept. For example, at the Esopus Transfer Station, residents can also drop off yard waste, scrap metal, electronics, freon appliances, propane tanks, tires, clothing, auto batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and more!

Please note: all MRDCs in Ulster County follow the UCRRA's guidelines for Dual Stream Recycling. Visit the Town of Esopus website to learn more.

Let's keep it clean. Let's keep it green. Let's keep it local! Look up your Town's information on our website, or follow us to watch the rest of our series.
