Project Update: CO 86 Kiowa Bridge Replacement

Expect Traffic Pattern Shift the week of October 19

Crews are expected to continue work on the bridge rail and begin removing temporary materials used during earlier bridge construction. Crews will also continue work on the roadway connections to the new bridge as the project moves closer to completion.

Motorists should expect slower speeds and brief delays during the change. Please follow posted signs, watch for flaggers, and use caution through the work zone.

CR 166 between CR 13 and CR 21 under construction starting Oct. 19

The third most travelled road in Elbert County will be under construction beginning October 19 for approximately 60 days, weather permitting.

Construction will occur six days a week from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. and will include:
• One Lane Closure: Due to the nature of the repairs, CR 166 will be reduced to a single lane at the bridge, with the eastbound lane closed for the duration of the project; and
• Traffic Control signals: Temporary traffic signals will operate 24 hours a day to regulate traffic flow. Flaggers will also be utilized as needed during active working hours.

Winter-ready and data-smart!

Have you recently spotted a small solar-powered device mounted above a county road? Good news — this is not a surveillance camera! It is a mini-weather station and part of Elbert County’s upgraded winter operations program, designed only to monitor road conditions like pavement temperature, snow accumulation, standing water, and ice formation. With real-time data, our Road & Bridge crews can dispatch snowplows and sand/salt trucks more efficiently, reduce unnecessary trips, and respond faster during storms — saving time, fuel, and materials while keeping you safe.

These units:
• Are aimed only at the roadway
• Capture still images, not video
• Do not track vehicles or people

They are weather tools — not surveillance equipment.
