☎️ RING. RING.

“What’s your favorite scary movie?”

Have you SEEN the current state of our democracy lately?

The plot twists are outrageous. The stakes are real. And unlike a horror movie, we don’t get to turn this one off.

But here’s the plot twist: We can change the ending.

🔪 October 20–31, Knox Young Dems is turning spooky season into something that lasts long after the credits roll.

We’re raising funds to support KYD’s year-round work —from voter engagement and civic education to community service, membership development, and the resources it takes to keep young people organized and involved.

Because here’s the real jump scare: Election Day isn’t the end of the story.

The work doesn’t stop on November 3. And neither do we.

Whether it’s $5, $10, $20, or whatever you can give, you’re helping us build what comes next.

🎬 AND THIS IS ONLY THE OPENING SCENE.

We’ve got more iconic horror-movie-inspired posters coming your way between now and Halloween. Consider yourself warned. 👀

VOTE. DONATE. CHANGE THE ENDING.

The fundraiser is LIVE. Donate now through the link in our bio.

THE FIRST TWO DAYS MADE NOISE. BUT THE POLLS? THEY’RE JUST WARMING UP. 🔥

In just two days, 176,471 Tennesseans have already voted early or absentee, including 12,800 early votes right here in Knox County!

That’s 65% ahead of the 2022 pace statewide and 42.3% ahead in Knox County at the same point in early voting.

And with 12 voting days still on the calendar, there’s plenty of time to make your plan.

We’ve put together your early-voting playbook with 11 Knox County voting locations, polling hours, Democratic candidates, constitutional amendments, the Knoxville charter question, and resources to help you navigate it all.

📍 Early Voting: October 14–29 (closed Sundays)
📬 Absentee Ballot Request Deadline: October 24 (eligible voters)
🗳️ Election Day: November 3

The first two days made noise. The rest count.

YES. NO. WAIT—WHAT?! 🤨

Be honest. How many times have you stared at your ballot, reread a constitutional amendment at least FIVE times, and STILL couldn’t figure out whether YES or NO actually meant what you wanted it to mean? 😭

Yeah. We’ve been there.

With early voting kicking off October 14, we’re getting ahead of the confusion. Because there’s more on your ballot than just candidates, and you deserve to know exactly what you’re voting on.

Tennessee has THREE constitutional amendments on the ballot this November (vote NO), covering pretrial bail, property taxes, and crime victims’ rights.

So we broke down the legal BS, what each amendment would change, and what voting YES or NO actually means.

Consider this your cheat sheet for tackling the amendments like a pro. 🗳️

And don’t stop there! Our 2026 Election Hub is your one-stop resource for the November election, with information on candidates, voting locations, important dates, and more.

📅 Early Voting: October 14–29
🗳️ Election Day: November 3

October is getting a little spooky at KYD! 🎃

We’re heading into the month with a little bit of everything: community service, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, membership activities, voter engagement, local government watch, and plenty of Halloween fun.

We’re also kicking off two special initiatives this month!

📞 What’s Your Favorite Scary Movie? You’re Already in One. From October 19–31, we’re bringing a horror-movie twist to our digital fundraising campaign, supporting KYD’s ongoing organizing, civic education, and voter engagement efforts.

🧥 Coats for the Cold. From October 21–November 6, KYD will be collecting new and gently used coats for children and adults in support of KARM. We’ll kick off collections at our October membership meeting, with additional drop-off locations to be announced!

From showing up for our neighbors to staying engaged in local government, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved this October.

We showed up again so you know what happened in our county.

September marked the first Knox County Commission meeting of the new term. Swipe through for the major votes: shifts in American Rescue Plan funding, new public-health dollars, school programs, and key ethics and zoning appointments.

But not everything fits in a graphic. Here is what else happened:

THE VOTES: Commission voted 6-5 to close 113 feet of the Wye Way terminus and approved more than $11 million in budget amendments and transfers.

WHAT DIDN’T MOVE: A Hardin Valley roundabout agreement, an effort to rescind commissioners’ FY27 pay increase, and a proposed override of the mayor’s veto were withdrawn. A separate ordinance addressing future commissioner and School Board compensation was deferred.

THE PUBLIC: Residents warned that the county’s road-resurfacing cycle could stretch up to 50 years, raised transparency concerns about law-enforcement surveillance data, and challenged the county’s reliance on Rural Metro’s subscription fire service.

And then there were the remarks from Commissioner Andy Fox, who used his time to discuss immigration, racial demographics, what he called “white culture,” Western civilization, and the Christian foundations of the United States.

We want to be clear: Knox County Young Democrats condemns those remarks.

Race, religion, national origin, or cultural background should never determine who belongs here. Knox County is home to people of every faith and no faith, every race, and every background. Everyone deserves to know they belong here equally.

We applaud Commissioner Commissioner Brandon Huckaby for speaking out afterward:

“Knox County belongs to all of us, and our responsibility is to every Knox Countian.”

That is the standard.

Observer Corps exists because local government is more than the final vote count. It is the appointments, the budget shifts, the residents waiting hours to speak, and what elected officials choose to say when they have the floor.

Local government keeps moving, and so will we.

Well… since you asked. 👀

Our future takes more than good intentions. It takes the resources to show up, serve, organize, and keep building.

That’s why we’re launching 20/20 for the Future.

From September 22–29, we’re looking for 20 contributions of $20 or more to help fund the year-round work behind Knox Young Dems—from voter engagement and community service to civic education, member development, outreach, events, and the infrastructure that keeps it all moving.

$20 is the starting point, not the ceiling. Give what you can, make it monthly if you want to support KYD year-round, or help us reach 20 by sharing the campaign.

Keep the future in focus & funded.

09/15/2026

Hispanic Heritage Month begins today, and September 15 is not an arbitrary date.

It marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile celebrating their independence in the days that follow.

That history is a useful reminder of something bigger: there is no single Hispanic or Latino experience. No one country, tradition, language, neighborhood, or story can stand in for communities whose histories stretch across nations and generations.

And those stories aren’t distant from us.

They are part of Knoxville and East Tennessee - in our neighborhoods, businesses, classrooms, art, food, organizations, families, and community life.

So from September 15 through October 15, KYD wants to use our voice to do more than simply mark the month. We’ll be highlighting local organizations, artists, businesses, events, resources, and stories from Hispanic and Latino communities across our region.

Not because one month can capture all of that history or experience. But it can give us a reason to pay closer attention to the people, places, and work that are already shaping the community we call home.

Who or what should we highlight?
