As you enjoy evening strolls in the summer, prioritize safety in low light. Boost visibility by carrying a flashlight and wearing reflective gear. Stick to designated crossings and walk facing traffic on unlit roads.
Drivers: Slow down so you have more time to react if someone enters the roadway unexpectedly.

Showers and thunderstorms return to the region tonight and Monday. The atmosphere has a lot of water in it, so these storms will be able to produce a LOT of rain over a small area. While some counties might see 3+ inches of rain Monday, neighboring counties might see very little. Keep an eye on the radar tonight and tomorrow, and avoided flooded roads if you encounter them.

As part of an ongoing effort to prevent drunk driving and remove intoxicated drivers from the streets, KPD officers and staff conducted a sobriety checkpoint last night in the 8200 block of Kingston Pike.
The checkpoint resulted in two arrests for driving under the influence, one for public intoxication and multiple citations.
Please do your part to help keep the roads as safe as possible. Slow down, buckle up, pay attention and never get behind the wheel while under the influence.

Thank you to the Knox County Board of Education, who unanimously approved naming the security office at Austin-East Magnet High School after Lt. Gordon Gwathney.
Lt. Gwathney, a nearly 30-year KPD veteran, unexpectedly passed away in October 2025 and served as Austin-East’s first-ever School Resource Officer from 1999-2003. During that time, he built countless lasting relationships and became affectionately known throughout the community as Officer G.
