Dr. Hugh Williamson and William Blount were appointed together to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. They both served in the Continental Congress and favored similar policies regarding land cession and the U.S. Constitution. William Blount was appointed governor of the Territory South of the River Ohio by President Washington in 1790.

On this day in 1790, President George Washington appointed William Blount as the Southwest Territory governor and Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Southern Department. Comprising modern-day Tennessee, it was formed from lands ceded by North Carolina to the federal government on December 22, 1789, to manage western expansion under the Ordinance of 1787. It was created to provide official federal governance to the region west of North Carolina, covering about 43,000 square miles.
Knoxville became the capital in 1792. The same year Governor William Blount and his family moved into the house that is now Blount Manison. You can tour the house Tuesdays – Sundays. Check our website BlountMansion.org for times and specialty tours.

William Blount was one of the 39 delegates who signed the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787, representing North Carolina.
239 years ag today was the 1st day of the United States Constitution Convention. Blount signed the Constitution representing North Carolina, despite having mixed feelings about it. He later became the only territorial governor of the Southwest Territory. He became a key figure in the creation of Tennessee and a signer whose home is honored in Knoxville.
