The fire truck that comes when you call in most of Texas is driven by somebody who was asleep in their own bed four minutes ago. 🚒

The large majority of fire departments in this state are volunteer. Not paid, not on shift, not sitting at the station waiting. They are welders and teachers and nurses and guys who run a feed store, and they carry a pager or a phone that can go off in the middle of a shower, a birthday dinner, or a Tuesday at two in the morning. Then they drive to the station, pull gear that is still damp from the last call, and go.

They pay for a lot of it themselves, or the county pays what it can, or the community does it with a barbecue plate sale and a raffle. The trucks are often older than the people driving them. And the calls are not only fires. They are wrecks out on the highway at night, grass fires running with the wind, water rescues, and cardiac calls where the closest hospital is fifty minutes away and the volunteer EMT kneeling on the floor is the only medicine in the room.

The hard part nobody outside it talks about is that in a small town you know the address before you get there. 🙏 You know whose kitchen it is. You go anyway, and then you go back to work in the morning like it was nothing.

Another nightshirt on the line at the Hydra Fire. The crew of E 1206 put in a 12 hr shift on division Zulu seeking out any heat and mopping up along the edge and up to 100’ in, literally crawling in or cutting they’re way through the brush and timber to find any heat that could be a problem during the heat of day. The amount of physical work that goes into containing a wildfire is unimaginable for most people but the team effort put forth by YOUR Bosque County fire departments goes on non stop 24/7 until this is done! A volunteer fire department is more than shiny red trucks, it’s people! Your friends and neighbors and they are all doing everything possible to protect life and property, missing work, family functions and everything else that goes on. The incredible communication and logistics that is taking place to ensure that not only is the fire staffed 24 hrs but also continuing to provide fire protection to our home districts as well . Please give them room to work and most of all , please support your local department or all and them if you have the means. We are all here for you!

ATTENTION… as I’m sure most of you know there’s a large wildland fire in the Meridian area and the city of Meridian is now under mandatory evacuation. Anyone that doesn’t have a place to go is asked to go to Meridian high school . As far as we know at this point the fire has not crossed Highway 6 but all of Bosque counties Fire departments are busy dealing with that Fire at the moment. Brazos Point FD did not respond to the Fire and are staffing multiple units from our station covering the areas from Lakeside Village over to Walnut Springs and Morgan. Also, members of Bosque Valley first responders group are staged in the area as well to respond to any medical emergencies. There’s a lot of smoke in the area but do not hesitate to call 911 if you feel that there is a fire or an emergency in your area. Just know that it may take longer than usual to get a unit to you. As I said before Brazos Point FD units are staffing at the station. They are not on the fire. We are available covering the north side of the county so those of you that live up in this area still have current fire protection. Anyone needing assistance should call 911 for emergencies or use the sheriffs normal business line for nonemergency questions. They are currently no other fires going in this part of the county.
