Mental Health Awareness Month is also a time to reflect on the history of mental health care in California — and the policies that continue to shape our communities today.

The legacy of CA Assemblyman Frank Lanterman has to include the 1967 Lanterman-Petris-Short Act, legislation that transformed how California approached living with mental illness.

The law sought to end indefinite institutionalization and restore civil rights to psychiatric patients, a major shift in public policy and human rights.

Mental health history is not separate from local history. It is part of the story of public policy, healthcare, disability rights, and community responsibility.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we encourage thoughtful conversations about how the past informs the present and how communities can advocate for compassionate, accessible mental health care for all.

Sunday, May 3rd 1pm - Please join us for this special legacy lecture on George E Hale( 1868-1938 ) and Mt. Wilson. Hale built what were the largest astronomical telescopes in the world from 1897-1993. He initiated what became Caltech. He worked with Henry Huntington to create the Huntington Library. Hale was also the moving force behind the creation of Pasadena’s elegant civic center.

Sam Hale was born in Pasadena,CA in 1942. He received his Bachelor’s degree and MBA from UC Berkeley in 1964 and 1966 respectively. He has spent his whole career in investment management. Sam was a Board member and later president of the Pasadena Humane Society in 2001. Sylvia and Sam moved from Pasadena to Santa Barbara in 2011 moving to Casa Dorinda in 2023. He is currently President of the Board of Trustees of the Mt Wilson Institute and Observatory

April 18th, 1906: At 5:12am 60 second shift in the San Andres Fault that moved at 1.7 miles a second created a 7.9 magnitude rupture that was felt for almost 300 miles from southern Oregon to Southern Los Angeles. The hardest affected area by far was San Francisco. While the earthquake itself, and its aftershocks were damaging, it was the fires that erupted afterward that did the most damage. At least 30 fires in the days following the earth quake, largely from ruptured gas mains cost $350 million in damages (1906 $), over 200,000 people were left without homes, and 3,000 lives were lost.

Support from across the nation was almost immediate, from food donations to the New York Yankees playing a rare Sunday baseball game to raise funds. One of the greatest needs was medical care, and quickly a series of field hospitals were designated across the city to manage the sudden public health crisis.

The day after the disaster, Dr. Roy S. Lanterman joined other medical professionals from Los Angeles to provide immediate care and support, sponsored by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Dr. Lanterman set up the first emergency hospital for the disaster and over the following weeks he and his team treated over 2,000 patients.

Happy 129th birthday to Lloyd Lanterman! (1897-1987)

When Lloyd passed away in 1987, he left his family home to the City of La Cañada in his will. He has lived in “El Retiro” as the family called it, for 70+ years. He loved to tinker, having earned a degree in mechanical engineering from USC, and even designed the winning automobile for the Indy 500 in 1930!
