1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. For Native American women, the risk is even higher. Native women are 7% more likely to develop breast cancer and are also more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage, when it is harder to treat. The good news is that early detection can save lives.
Here are a few ways to lower your risk and catch breast cancer early:
• Know your risk, including age, family history, and breast density
• Get regular mammograms beginning at age 40 (earlier if your doctor recommends it)
• Stay active and maintain a healthy weight
• Don’t smoke
• Limit alcohol
