A Closer Look at Wisconsin’s Elections: Confidence Through Transparency
Over the past two years, I’ve had the opportunity to observe detailed demonstrations of Wisconsin’s election practices in Madison, La Crosse, Waukesha, Wisconsin Dells, Minocqua and, most recently, Milwaukee. The attached photo features Milwaukee Election Commission Executive Director Paulina Gutiérrez.
At each location, election officials walked us through their procedures step by step and answered questions from attendees. These sessions offered a firsthand look at the work that goes into conducting an election.
Wisconsin has one of the most decentralized election systems in the nation, with more than 1,800 local election jurisdictions. Local officials follow detailed guidelines established by the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Coordinating this system requires extensive training, careful planning and attention to detail.
What stood out to me was the thoroughness and remarkable consistency of the procedures across the communities I visited. Just as important was the dedication of the local election officials responsible for carrying them out.
Confidence in our elections is strengthened by transparency, accountability and the dedicated people who do the work. My firsthand observations have reinforced my confidence in the integrity of Wisconsin’s election process.
Taking the time to understand how our elections work is one way we can build public trust in our democracy.
Have you taken the opportunity to observe the election process in your community?
