Heartland Fire & Rescue Please do NOT request emergency assistance on this page. Please call 9-1-1 for emergencies. Heartland Fire includes El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove.

We seek to provide safe communities through exceptional, professional service. On January 1, 2010, the Cities of El Cajon, La Mesa and Lemon Grove entered into a joint exercise of powers agreement for management and delivery of fire protection and emergency medical services. This management team is known as Heartland Fire & Rescue. The management team includes a fire chief, one deputy fire chief, a fire marshal, three division chiefs, a deputy fire marshal, five battalion chiefs, three fire inspectors, an emergency management coordinator, and five administrative support staff. This unique cooperative fire services agreement provides cost containment opportunities, maintains local control, ensures a high level of fire and emergency medical services delivery, and maximizes resource utilization. This cooperative service manages eight fire stations, nine engine companies, two truck companies, three paramedic transport units, and one battalion chief. The joint powers agreement serves a population of 180,000 and responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service each year.

Halloween is quickly approaching! No matter how you plan to celebrate the holiday, here are some tips to help make your Halloween a safe and happy one.

• If you'll be going house to house, tell a family member or friend not going with you, what route you’ll be taking.
• Children should be accompanied by an adult. Take your mobile phone with you. Make sure it’s fully charged before you leave home.
• Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.
• When selecting a costume, make sure it’s the right size to prevent trips and falls. Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit a child’s vision.
• Slow down and be alert! Kids are excited on Halloween and may dart into the street. Turn on your car’s headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.
• Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.
• Inspect treats before indulging. Discard anything that's not sealed, has torn packaging or looks questionable.
• Open flames can be a safety hazard. Instead of using candles in your Jack O’ Lantern, light pumpkins with flashlights, battery-operated flameless candles or glow sticks instead.

The hot weather isn't done with us yet. Forecasts call for temperatures to begin to rise starting Thursday and continue well into next week. Now is a good time to take another look at these hot weather safety tips.
• Spend time in PUBLIC FACILITIES that are air-conditioned.
• Check regularly on those WITHOUT air-conditioning.
• Drink plenty of FLUIDS even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Make sure your PETS have plenty of clean, cool water to drink.
• LIMIT or avoid outside activities, especially at midday when the sun is hottest.
• Wear loose, LIGHTWEIGHT, light-colored clothing and use sunscreen.
• CLOSE your blinds. Your windows let in a lot of heat from the sun.
• Take COOL showers or baths to cool down.
• Skip the STOVE. Instead of cooking inside, consider heading outdoors and using a grill or opting for foods you can eat without warming
• Move DOWNSTAIRS. Heat rises, so consider moving to a lower floor if it’s too hot to sleep upstairs.
• Apply ICE PACKS or cool washcloths. Placing an ice pack or cool washcloth on strong-pulsed areas like your wrists and neck can help to cool you down.
• If the pavement is TOO HOT for you to touch, it’s too hot for your pets.
• NEVER leave children or pets in cars. Look before you lock!
