Oops! We did it again. 😂 Another Wednesday evening with another engaging drill and a room full of attendees, hosted by and led by Dr. Christopher Michetti, Trauma Medical Director at University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo MD. Dr. Michetti is a trauma and general surgeon, and critical care physician, board certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care.

We discussed pre-hospital care, the trauma department's function in the ER, and things that can help assure the best possible outcome for our patient. Once again, we were joined by members from our neighboring departments, including Dentsville Volunteer EMS, FIRE and Auxiliary, Inc., Bryans Road Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc., Ironsides Volunteer Rescue Squad, Charles County Department of Emergency Services, and others. Interested? Join us at www.ccvrs.org/join.

It is with the deepest of regrets that the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of Past President Bernard R. Winkler, Jr. on Monday, October 19, 2026. BR joined the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department in 1959 and devoted more than five decades to serving the citizens of our community. He served the department in numerous leadership roles including President, Vice President, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and member of the Board of Directors. He also served on the House and Old Firehouse committees, contributing his time and experience to the continued success of the department.

BR’s commitment to the fire service extended beyond his membership with the department. As the owner of La Plata Mill & Supply, he was a steadfast supporter of the department and our ever-changing needs. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, providing equipment and materials to support the department’s operations and training. His generosity was especially meaningful to our structural collapse team for which he consistently provided equipment and materials needed to train and prepare for various types of responses. BR played a valuable role in helping our members develop the skills and resources necessary to serve our community.

BR represented our department through his service as a delegate to the Charles County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, its Executive Committee, and the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association. His involvement reflected a commitment not only to our department but also to the broader fire service throughout Southern Maryland.

BR’s record of service earned him recognition as a worthy candidate for the Marbury F. Gates Service Cup Award from the Maryland State Firemen’s Association, honoring those who exemplify fifty years of continuous and faithful fire department service to their communities.

The members of La Plata Volunteer Fire Department extend our heartfelt condolences to BR’s family and friends during this difficult time. We are grateful for his many years of service and the lasting impact he has made on our department and community.

Funeral arrangements will be announced once they have been finalized.
