October is National Children’s Health Month, a reminder that small, everyday habits can make a big difference in a child’s well-being. As Halloween kicks off a season filled with candy, parties and holiday treats, maintaining healthy routines can help children stay active, nourished and ready for the colder months ahead.

National Parenting Week also falls in October, making it a timely opportunity for families to focus on simple habits that support children’s health. Torie Ennis, community health administrator for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, shared six tips to help parents build healthy routines this fall.

“Keep it simple,” Ennis said. “Start with one small change this week, and see your family make healthy lifelong habits.

Service to the community can happen when you least expect it.

When a dump truck crashed near the E.V. Smith Research Center in Shorter, Alabama Extension and Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station employees, Auburn faculty and graduate students rushed to help.

Together, they directed traffic away from the wreck and stayed beside the injured driver, keeping him calm until emergency responders arrived. The team later learned he was recovering.

Their quick response, teamwork and compassion reflect a commitment to serving others that reaches far beyond their daily work.

Do you fish in the Valley Creek watershed? We want to hear from you!

Anglers are invited to join us on October 29 at the Bessemer Recreation Center for a community workshop as part of an EPA-funded project led by Auburn University.

We're working with anglers and local communities to better understand aquatic litter challenges and identify strategies to help keep our waterways clean and healthy. Whether you fish occasionally or spend every chance you get on the water, your experiences and perspectives can help inform future solutions and outreach efforts.

RSVP by October 22 with this link https://aub.ie/Valley Creek

Stay tuned for additional workshop opportunities this fall.
