After this week’s coastal flooding, the Laguna Beach Fire Department reminds residents that saltwater can damage the lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, hybrids, e-bikes and scooters, and cause fires days or even weeks after exposure.
If you suspect saltwater damage, including if your vehicle was partially submerged or floodwater may have reached its battery or electrical components:

- Do not drive or charge it, even if it appears to operate
normally
- Contact your insurance company
- Arrange for professional towing
- Have it inspected by a certified mechanic qualified to
service electric or hybrid vehicles.

If you notice smoke, hissing, popping or unusual heat, move away immediately and call 911. Do not attempt to move the vehicle or extinguish the fire yourself.

We are proud to introduce our new Pump Pod, a mobile training system that allows our firefighters and engineers to practice critical pumping operations while capturing and recirculating the water used during training.

Laguna Beach is a proud water-wise community, and we want to do our part to support and maintain those conservation efforts. This innovative equipment provides realistic, hands-on training, improves operation readiness and significantly reduces water waste.

Thank you to CA Dept. of Water Resources and Municipal Water District of OC for your partnership. We look forward to putting this pump- pod to use.

The demolition derby and figure 8 race brought plenty of action, competition and destruction! But the most important part was coming together to support CHOC Foundation and the children and families they serve. ❤️

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we raised $53,124, surpassing our $50,000 goal! 🎉

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, showed up, and supported this incredible cause. Your generosity makes a difference!

CONGRATULATIONS to Jeff Calvert for taking home another first-place trophy! 🏆🏁.

We are excited to announce a new technology trial in partnership with Sensory AI , an innovative company focused on early wildfire detection. As part of this pilot program, a wildfire detection sensor has been installed at Alta Laguna Park overlooking Aliso Woods Canyon to evaluate its ability to identify wildfire ignitions in their earliest stages.

Early detection is one of the most critical components of an effective wildland fire response. Every minute matters. By identifying a fire at or near the point of ignition and immediately notifying emergency responders, this technology has the potential to reduce response times, limit fire growth, and improve our ability to keep small fires from becoming large-scale urban conflagrations.

“It’s incredible to look forward and see what artificial intelligence and emerging technologies can bring to the fire service,” said Fire Chief Niko King. “Leveraging innovative tools like SensoRy AI allows us to strengthen our situational awareness, improve the speed of our response, and ultimately enhance the safety of our community. We are always looking for new ways to better protect the people and places that make Laguna Beach so special.”

The primary goal of this trial is to provide the Laguna Beach Fire Department and our regional partners with the earliest possible notification of a wildfire ignition, giving firefighters the greatest opportunity to extinguish a fire before it has the chance to grow into a major incident.

California has experienced firsthand the devastating consequences of catastrophic wildfires. The Palisades and Eaton Fires in 2025 claimed 31 lives, destroyed more than 16,000 structures, and resulted in well over $100 billion in economic losses. Technologies that improve detection and response times represent an important step toward reducing the impacts of future wildfires.
