The Los Angeles Cal RCV volunteers are on fire. We’ve been showing up at demonstrations, farmers markets , on college campuses and at fairs. Why? Because our greatest challenge is that most people don’t know or have misinformation about RCV. The only way we can really effectively change that is one conversation at a time. But things are changing. Instead of chasing after people and asking them to listen to us for a minute it’s becoming common that people are coming to our purple booth wherever we pop up. They are asking how they can help. Los Angelicans are tired of feeling cheated and silenced. As soon as they realize there is a viable way to change this system that we’ve felt trapped in for so long they want to help make that change happen!

California is watching in real time what happens when a crowded field collides with the limits of the Top Two system. Instead of expanding voter choice, some political insiders are now pushing to revert back to partisan open primaries — a step backward that would further silo voters and shrink competition.
That’s not reform. That’s regression.
The answer to vote-splitting and voter frustration isn’t less choice — it’s better elections. Ranked Choice Voting gives voters the freedom to rank candidates in order of preference, helps ensure broader support, and prevents scenarios where millions of Californians could end up shut out of the general election conversation altogether.
California doesn’t need to go backward. We need to modernize our democracy.
This gubernatorial race should be a wake-up call: now is the time to push for RCV. 🗳️ Is reverting back to open primaries the answer?

Did you know California could end up with only Republican choices for governor in November? It's not because Republicans have taken over. It's because a bunch of Democrats are splitting the same pool of votes under our top-two primary.
Alaska already fixed this problem with a top-four primary and ranked choice voting. Our co-founder Tom Charron explains how it works and why California should do the same in today's Mercury News.
