Honoring Our Local Military Heritage

During the 1958–1960 period, Chennault Air Force Base in Lake Charles, Louisiana, served as a critical front-line Strategic Air Command (SAC) facility. Centered entirely around nuclear deterrence at the height of the Cold War, SAC's primary role at the base involved maintaining long-range nuclear strike capabilities and aerial refueling operations.

For historical insight into this vital era, look no further than the official Strategic Air Command Mission as taken from the Chennault Base Guide:

“Today, as it has since 1946, the Strategic Air Command stands in constant readiness to launch nuclear attacks which would destroy an enemy’s war making capacity to the extent that he would no longer have the will or ability to wage war. These attacks would be aimed at such objectives as industrial areas, communications centers, sources of power and stockpiles of strategic materials.

As the USAF’s long-range nuclear jet striking force, SAC’s mission is to conduct strategic air operations on a global basis. SAC must also be prepared to support appropriate area commanders by attacks on suitable tactical targets and, as the extended arm of America’s defense, it must prevent the enemy from launching its own long-range bomber force.

With the advent of the missile age, SAC has been assigned primary responsibility for the use of strategic missiles, which are now being integrated into the command. Missiles will not replace, but will supplement the manned bomber force, which will remain a vital part of the nation’s deterrent strength in the foreseeable future. Already in training are five strategic missile squadrons, two to be equipped with intercontinental ballistic missiles, one with the intercontinental pilotless aircraft, “Snark,” and two with intermediate range ballistic missiles.

It is SAC’s hope that, as it has since its inception, its mighty capability will continue to deter global aggression and that its awesome power will never have to be unleashed.”

We are proud to preserve and share the stories of Southwest Louisiana's profound impact on global history.

We are proud to have completed our inaugural project at the Historic Chennault Air Force Base: the installation of an official Historical Marker.

This marker honors the legacy of Lt. General Claire Lee Chennault and his historic role as Commander of the legendary “Flying Tigers” and the 14th Air Force, recognizing his pivotal contributions to aerial combat during World War II. This milestone is only the beginning of many projects we hope to accomplish.

We were deeply honored to welcome Mrs. Nell Calloway as our keynote speaker for the unveiling ceremony. As the President and CEO of the Chennault Aviation & Military Museum—and the granddaughter of Lt. General Chennault—Mrs. Calloway continues to be a steadfast supporter of our mission to keep her grandfather’s legacy alive.

The Chennault Aviation & Military Museum has long been a source of personal inspiration. Every visit provides a wealth of educational value, and it serves as the ultimate blueprint for our long-term vision. Our most ambitious goal is to establish our very own Chennault Museum right here in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on the historic former Air Base grounds.

Historic Chennault Air Force Base — Vol. 1, Issue 2 is here!

The September 2026 edition of the Historic Chennault Air Force Base Quarterly Newsletter is out now, and we have a lot to report. What started as a conversation between a grandfather and his 10-year-old grandson has grown into one of the most exciting historical preservation efforts in Southwest Louisiana — and the momentum keeps building.

Here's a look at what's active and underway:

🏛️ Chennault Veterans Museum — Work is progressing on establishing a premier veterans museum on the former air base grounds, honoring Lt. General Claire Lee Chennault and the service members who shaped this community's history. The vision: a must-visit cultural destination for SWLA and beyond.

🌿 Lt. General Claire Lee Chennault Plaza — Plans are in development for a commemorative public plaza featuring architectural hardscape, natural landscaping, and four central high-fidelity historical monuments. A permanent space to reflect, learn, and honor.

🪧 Historic Street Signage Initiative — New commemorative street signs carrying the Historic Chennault Air Force Base brand and logo are in the works, bringing a unified identity to the former base corridors.

🚧 Historic Entrance Sign Project — Gateway signage is being planned for two key access points: the West Entrance at I-210 and Sen. J. Bennett Johnston Avenue, and the North Entrance on Main Street. First impressions that tell the story before you even step out of the car.

📱 Social Media Campaign — You're already here! Our Facebook and Instagram presence launched this summer and is bringing the history of this remarkable place to a new, multi-generational audience week by week.

Did You Know? 2,000 Pilots Trained Here

Did you know? When Lake Charles Army Flying School graduated its final class in January 1943, more than 2,000 pilots had trained on this very airfield. From single-engine fighter training under the Gulf Coast Army Air Force Training Center to later bomber crew training, this ground shaped the careers of thousands of American airmen.
