Step back into the 1930s at O'Leno State Park. 🌲

Long before it became one of Florida's favorite state parks, O'Leno State Park and River Rise Preserve was shaped by the young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps, known as the CCC. These "service men" were part of a New Deal program that put thousands of young Americans to work during the Great Depression, building parks and sending paychecks home to their families.

Right here along the Santa Fe River in Columbia County, CCC crews spent the mid 1930s:

🪓 Clearing land and carving out the trails
🏕️ Building cabins, pavilions, and picnic shelters from native pine and limestone
🌉 Constructing the suspension bridge that still crosses the river today

Their story lives on inside the park's museum, tucked into an original CCC built structure, where you can see the vintage photos, artifacts, and service certificates for yourself.

Come walk the trails they built and discover a piece of Florida history that has stood the test of time. 🍂

💜💛 A Little CHS Homecoming History… 🐯

Before there was a Homecoming parade, there was already a whole lot of Tiger spirit!

📜 1929: CHS students were already marching to the big football games, following the Municipal Band through town.

🔥 1936: A new tradition was taking shape with a huge student pep parade, complete with football players, torches, cheering and a bonfire.

👑 1948: Columbia High celebrated Homecoming with the crowning of a Football Queen.

🎉 1949: History was made! Columbia High held its first elaborate Homecoming celebration and first official Homecoming parade. Students, alumni and bands filled the streets of Lake City following a giant pep rally. The celebration continued with a bonfire, alumni activities, pre-game ceremonies and a Homecoming dance.

What began with students marching to football games in 1929 had grown into a beloved Homecoming tradition by 1949 — one that would bring CHS students, alumni and the Lake City community together for generations.

💜💛 Some traditions become memories. Others become history.

🐯 Go Tigers!

Three North Florida state parks worth loading up the tent for, plus something about each most people do not know. 🏕️

💦 Ichetucknee Springs State Park, Fort White
Day use only, so camp at the private campgrounds right at the entrance and be first to that 72 degree water.

🎶 Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park, White Springs
Camp under the oaks on the Suwannee. Heads up: the campground closes for about a week around the Florida Folk Festival.

🌳 O'Leno State Park and River Rise Preserve, High Springs
Old Florida at its best, where the Santa Fe River vanishes underground and rises again three miles south at River Rise.

All an easy drive from Lake City.
