Fire managers on the have been working with the National Weather Service to evaluate weather conditions for the prescribed fire. Conditions look favorable for ignitions on Friday, Oct. 9.

The O'Brien prescribed fire is located approximately three miles West of Lake George in Park County. Smoke may be visible along the Highway 24 corridor from Wilkerson Pass to Woodland Park, including in Lake George, Florissant, Divide, Fossil Beds National Monument, and Eleven Mile Reservoir. To view air quality impacts, please view a smoke map at airnow.gov.

Public and firefighter safety is always the first consideration for all fire management operations. Each prescribed fire has a detailed prescribed fire plan developed from the comprehensive planning efforts conducted long before the project activities are initiated.

USFS is planning some prescribed mitigation burns in our area (South Park Ranger District). See the link below for more information.

Beginning as early as October 3, 2026 and dependent on favorable weather and fuel conditions, the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands plan to conduct prescribed fire operations. This work may continue through 2026, as weather conditions allow.

Residents and visitors may see or smell smoke during or shortly after a prescribed burn, especially overnight or early in the morning. Fire managers carefully plan each burn to reduce smoke impacts, considering weather, wind, humidity, and vegetation conditions. All prescribed burns must comply with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment standards to minimize impacts to communities and sensitive individuals. In case you missed the first Free County-Wide Pine Needle & Leaf Disposal Event, we are set to have another one in September, thanks to Teller County, Apex Waste Solutions, and the area Fire Departments.

Fire restrictions on all National Forest System lands within the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands will be rescinded, effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, September 17.

Recent rains over the forest have lessened the risk of wildland fire, allowing restrictions to be lifted. Despite recent moisture, many areas across the PSICC remain in drought of varying levels of intensity. Hunters, campers and all other forest and grassland visitors should exercise caution to reduce wildfire risk as late-season fires have become more common in the Rocky Mountain region. Even if your fire is a relatively small warming fire, the fire should be dead out before you leave the site.
