This week class 26-02 focused on one of the most fundamental skills in firefighting: hose operations!

Recruits learned about connecting to fire hydrants, stretching and advancing hose, hose handling techniques and more. They practiced pulling hose off of our fire engines and moving charged hose through our training tower, around obstacles including several stair cases. It is essential firefighters are confident in hose operations as it is our primary tool we use to deliver water to a fire. Often times this is done in an unfamiliar environment with limited visibility. Firefighters must work together quickly and efficiently while deploying and advancing fire hose.

A trivia question for those who like to play: How many gallons of water do you think our fire engines carry inside their tank at all times?

Recruit Firefighter Academy Class 26-02 had a busy week 2. The recruits start every morning with physical fitness training. You can see that the training cadre also participates in fitness training to continue their own fitness. Cadre Instructors are dedicated to leading by example with the new recruits. LOFD has a mature PEER Fitness Team. All recruit workouts are build for growth in fitness and injury prevention. Recruit classes participate in a variety of workouts including swimming and gym workouts added in.
Class 26-02 spent the week learning about Search & Rescue, Firefighter Rescue and NW Natural Gas emergencies. FF Tejedas & Carlson from Gresham Fire gave them great insight on proper techniques for treating victims and firefighters that have sustained burns.
NW Natural Gas trainer Greg Gonzalez and his team taught the importance of safety and NW Natural Gases role during Natural Gas Emergencies.

Lake Oswego Fire Recruits have finished their first week of their twelve week academy.

This week recruits learned about SCBAs (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) from Battalion Chief Barnum. An SCBA contains compressed air firefighters breathe while in a building with smoke or fire. It is vital firefighters know the ins and outs of an SCBA including how it works, the components of it and how to help other firefighters problem solve in a dangerous situation if needed. Recruits worked on search patterns to retrieve the different parts of an SCBA and then their knowledge was tested by being tasked with putting it back together with limited visibility.

In addition to SCBA knowledge recruits were taught about the importance of physical fitness, building construction, fire and smoke behavior, ropes and knots, and more!

A huge thank you to our partners at the Uplands Neighborhood Association, Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation, Lake Oswego Police Department, and the Oregon Army National Guard for coming together with our community to help reduce wildfire risk at Iron Mountain Park!

This is what community preparedness looks like — neighbors, City departments, and regional partners working side by side to make our shared spaces safer and more resilient.

On September 30 and October 1, crews and volunteers will be working throughout Iron Mountain Park to remove “ladder fuels” such as underbrush, dry debris, and fallen branches that can allow a ground fire to climb into the tree canopy. The work will also improve trail visibility and help suppress invasive plants.

For everyone’s safety, Iron Mountain Park will be fully closed from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days while this work is underway.

We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, equipment, and teamwork being dedicated to this effort. Wildfire risk reduction takes all of us, and partnerships like these make a real difference in protecting our neighborhoods, our natural areas, and our community.

Thank you to everyone helping make Lake Oswego safer and more wildfire-ready!

What’s Up at LOFD? Recruit Firefighter Academy 26-02 Starts Monday!
New recruit firefighters arrive early Monday morning to begin the journey of becoming a Lake Oswego Firefighter.
How will you know who they are? All recruits wear red t-shirts or grey polo shirts while training. They will be trained by highly motivated, senior firefighters (Cadre), they ensure the recruits learning objectives and safety standards are met each day.
How will you know where they are training? The United States flag and Class Guidon Flags are flown each day.
The United States flag and Class Guidon Flag will be flown on the fourth floor of the training tower beginning each day of the 12 week academy.
The Flags flying proudly represent the honor, unity and traditions of the fire service and those who served before. The Recruit Firefighter Academy Guidon represents the identity, unity and standards of the recruit class. Displayed prominently during training, the Guidon serves as a constant visual reminder the recruits operate as a single crew-accountable to one another and committed to excellence. The Guidon is more than a marker of formation or location; it reflects the collective effort, attitude, and performance of the recruit class.
When you see the firefighter recruits jogging, training around town or flying the flags a top of the tower you now know of the significants of the flags they are flying. As with all of Lake Oswego Fire Training, do not hesitate to stop by and watch, ask questions, or receive a fire sticker and helmet from an LOFD firefighter.

Today, the Lake Oswego Police Department, Lake Oswego Fire Department, City of Lake Oswego and American Medical Response came together to remember and honor the lives lost and forever impacted by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the first responders who answered the call, the families who experienced unimaginable loss, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

Together, we observed a moment of silence in their honor.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸
