The safety of our children must be a top priority for a community.

School Bus Safety Week highlights a critical reality – our kids are most vulnerable not while riding the bus, but while boarding and exiting it. Most school-bus-related fatalities occur outside the vehicle, often when motorists fail to stop for flashing red lights and extended stop-arms. These tragedies are entirely preventable. The law is simple: flashing red lights mean stop.

Understanding Flashing Lights on a Bus

Yellow flashing lights: The bus is preparing to stop. Motorists should slow down and prepare to come to a complete stop.
Red flashing lights: The bus is loading or unloading children. Drivers traveling in both directions must come to a complete stop, regardless of whether the stop arm has been extended.
Resuming travel: Drivers may only proceed once the red lights are turned off, the stop-arm is retracted, and the bus begins moving again.

Minnesota School Bus Laws and Penalties

Stopping distance: Under Minnesota law, drivers must stop at least 20 feet away from a stopped school bus as soon as the red lights begin flashing, whether the physical stop-arm is fully extended yet or not.
Divided highways: On a physically divided highway (a road separated by a median, concrete barrier or island), only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus are required to stop. On all other roads, including undivided multi-lane roads, traffic in both directions must stop.
Strict penalties: Illegally passing a school bus in Minnesota carries a minimum fine of $500. Drivers can face criminal charges for passing a school bus on the right, passing when a child is outside the bus, or injuring or killing a child.

Respect the "Danger Zone"

The area immediately surrounding a school bus is a critical hazard area for children. This is where a child may not be seen by the bus driver and, therefore, is in the most danger. These areas include:

10 feet in front: The bus driver sits high up and may not see small children walking directly in front.
10 feet on the sides: Blind spots prevent bus drivers from seeing children walking along the side.
Behind the bus: The rear area offers zero direct visibility for the bus driver.

By staying alert, slowing down and obeying bus laws in school zones and neighborhoods, we can all work together to protect our youngest pedestrians. Please share these reminders with family, friends and neighbors so everyone makes it home safely. Together, we can drive Minnesota toward zero deaths.

October 17 — Case #1: The Great Pumpkin Stakeout
Detective Question: The Chief has received a report of a boy waiting in a pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin. In the classic Peanuts Halloween cartoon, who is the boy?

Trick-or-Treat Tip: Try makeup instead of a mask. Masks can be hot and uncomfortable, and they can obstruct a child's vision, a dangerous thing when kids are crossing streets and going up and down steps

Our thoughts and Prayers are with our Law Enforcement family at the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, the family of Deputy Katherine Frank and the Minnehaha County community over the tragic loss of Deputy Katherine Frank!

Passing of Deputy Katherine Frank -

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office announces with profound sadness the passing of Deputy Katherine Frank, age 26, earlier today. Deputy Frank was surrounded by her family and loved ones in her final moments. In her final act of service and generosity, she became an organ donor, continuing to help others even in her passing. Katherine worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary from September 2022 until being hired with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office in June 2024.

Deputy Frank’s death is a significant loss to our agency and to the broader law enforcement community in and around Sioux Falls. She served the citizens of Minnehaha County with professionalism, humility, and dedication. Her absence will be felt deeply by all who have had the privilege of working alongside her.

A memorial has been established at the Law Enforcement Center located at 320 W. 4th St., Sioux Falls, SD, for those who wish to pay their respects. The Sheriff’s Office will also continue maintaining a presence at the hospital as we support her family during this difficult time.
Further information regarding funeral services, honors, and departmental arrangements will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

Deputy Frank served with dignity and heart. Her service made a meaningful difference, and her impact will remain with us always.

Sunday AM update: Burn ban continues on Sunday until 6PM

Burning Ban starting tomorrow (Saturday) at 8:00 AM

Due to Saturday’s forecasted critical fire weather conditions and current wildland fuel conditions, including crop fields, the DNR and Sheriff's Office are advising there will be No Open Burning – Campfires allowed on 10/10/26 (Saturday) starting at 8:00 am. Anyone who burned piles this week is encouraged to double check them for any holdover heat that could rekindle in tomorrow's windy conditions.

Current fire danger and burning restrictions can be found here on the DNR's website: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html
