E26 stopped by Lindo Park Elementary School today for a show and tell, giving students a chance to meet their local firefighters and get a closer look at a fire engine.

The students had the opportunity to learn about the equipment firefighters use, ask questions, and see a little of what goes into the job of protecting our community.

We always enjoy getting out into the community and spending time with our youngest residents. You never know which curious student might be inspired to become a firefighter someday!

Thank you to Lindo Park Elementary School for having us. We appreciate the opportunity to connect with our local students and help them learn more about fire and life safety.

Today, we recognize Fire Chief Don Butz on his 10-year anniversary as Fire Chief of the Lakeside Fire Protection District.

Over the past decade, Chief Butz has led our district in serving the communities of Lakeside and the surrounding East County area. Leading a fire district is about more than responding to emergencies. It means supporting the men and women who answer those calls, preparing for the challenges ahead, and making decisions that help protect the community we serve.

Ten years of leadership is a milestone worth recognizing. Please join us in congratulating Chief Butz on this anniversary and thanking him for his continued service to the Lakeside Fire Protection District and the communities we are proud to protect.

Congratulations, Chief, on 10 years!

The Great ShakeOut is Tomorrow!

Are you ready if an earthquake hits?

Tomorrow, October 15, is International ShakeOut Day, a great reminder to take a few minutes to practice what to do when the ground starts shaking.

If you’re indoors when an earthquake strikes, remember three important steps:

* DROP to your hands and knees.
* COVER your head and neck and take shelter under a sturdy desk or table if possible.
* HOLD ON until the shaking stops.

Take a few minutes to talk with your family, review your emergency plan, and make sure you have emergency supplies ready. Knowing what to do before an earthquake happens can make a real difference when every second counts.

Don’t wait until the next earthquake to prepare. Practice today so you’re ready tomorrow.

Lakeside and San Diego residents, a storm system connected to Tropical Storm Rachel is expected to move through San Diego County this weekend. We could see periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, and localized flooding. The heaviest rain is currently expected on Sunday, but the forecast may change as the storm gets closer.

Now is a good time to take a few minutes and get ready before the rain arrives.

Here are a few things you can do:

* Clear leaves and debris from gutters, storm drains, and drainage areas around your property.
* Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, and anything else that could be blown around by strong winds.
* Check areas around your home that are prone to flooding, and use sandbags if needed.
* Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
* Never drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don’t drown.
* Stay alert for changing weather conditions, road closures, and possible flooding.

Please remember: Turn around, don’t drown. It’s never worth risking your life to drive through standing or moving water. You can’t always tell how deep it is or what hazards may be hidden underneath.

We encourage everyone to keep an eye on the forecast and take a few simple steps now to help protect your home and family.

As part of Fire Prevention Month, we’re highlighting a hazard that has become increasingly common in our homes and communities: lithium-ion batteries.

These batteries are convenient and reliable, but when they’re damaged, improperly charged, or poorly maintained, they can become a serious fire hazard.

Take a moment to look at the battery powered devices in your home. Make sure they’re in good condition, follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions, and don’t ignore signs that a battery may be failing.

Fire prevention starts with being aware of the everyday hazards around us and taking simple steps to keep them from becoming a fire.

Stay informed. Stay aware. Stay safe.

This past weekend, members of the Lakeside Fire Protection District Honor Guard had the honor of participating in the Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremony in Sacramento.

Firefighters Naylor, Brooks, Smith, and Logid proudly represented Lakeside during this year’s Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremony. They helped honor the newly added names to the memorial and stood watch as the families of fallen firefighters made their way through the Sea of Blue.

Being part of a ceremony honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice is both challenging and humbling. Our Honor Guard carried out their duties with professionalism, respect, and pride while standing alongside the families, friends, and firefighters who came together to remember those who gave everything for others.

We are proud of our Honor Guard and the way they represent Lakeside Fire Protection District.

We remember. We honor. We never forget.

Last night, (10/5/26) Light & Air 3 (LA3) was called to assist at a fire in La Mesa at a garbage disposal warehouse, helping crews with one of the most important resources on any large scale fire: breathable air.

LA3 provided support by helping refill SCBA bottles, allowing firefighters to remain in their protective equipment and continue working safely in a challenging environment.

Our Light & Air unit is more than just a resource for Lakeside Fire Protection District. LA3 is an asset to our surrounding fire agencies, providing critical support when incidents require additional SCBA bottle capacity and extended operations.

This is a great example of departments working together and sharing resources to keep firefighters safe and operations moving.

When temperatures rise, the calls don’t stop and neither does the training.

Our firefighters continue to train and prepare, even during periods of extreme heat. But training in these conditions requires an added focus on firefighter safety.

Hydration, rest, rehab, and recognizing the signs of heat illness are critical. We monitor our crews, take appropriate breaks, and make sure everyone has the opportunity to cool down and recover.

The goal is simple: Train hard. Train smart. Go home safe.

Because preparing to protect our community also means protecting the people who respond to the call.

October is Fire Prevention Month.

Fire prevention starts long before the fire department arrives. Take a few minutes this month to make sure your home and family are prepared.

Check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Make sure everyone in your home knows two ways out of every room and has a meeting place outside. Talk to your kids about fire safety, and keep matches, lighters, and other ignition sources away from children.

Most importantly, have a plan and practice it. In a fire, you may only have minutes to get out safely.

Take action today: Test your alarms, review your family’s escape plan, and practice your home fire drill. Don’t wait until there’s an emergency to be prepared.

From all of us at Lakeside Fire Protection District, stay safe.
