Banned Books Week launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries, schools, and bookstores. ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 4,235 unique titles challenged in 2025, only five titles behind the record set in 2023. Nearly 92% of 2025 book challenges were initiated by pressure groups, government officials, and decision makers, and 5,668 titles were banned from libraries (66% of the total challenged), with access to an additional 920 books restricted.

It's the start of Banned Book Week!
Circulation matters! Checking out banned books or books about topics that are frequently targeted for censorship proves that the community is interested in reading them. Library staff can use circulation data to support keeping the books on shelves when they are challenged and to justify ordering more books by the same authors or on the same topic.

With an upcoming change to Libby/Bridges, libraries are now required to have patrons use a login password. Passwords are set to automatically be the phone number on file. If you notice you're unable to log into your Libby in the upcoming weeks, please give the library a call so we can reset your password and help you get into your account!
