The SCACD East Piedmont Area Meeting, hosted by Newberry Soil and Water Conservation District, brought together conservation leaders, district staff, commissioners, and partners from across the region for a day of collaboration, education, and networking.

One of the highlights of the meeting is always hearing reports from each district and learning about the conservation programs, outreach efforts, and projects taking place across the East Piedmont region. These updates showcase the important work being done in local communities and provide valuable opportunities to share ideas and successes.

Attendees also enjoyed a tour of the Newberry Museum's 18th Century Medicinal Plant Garden, where participants learned about historical plant uses and local history. The afternoon featured a presentation from New Heydt's Agridrone Service, highlighting innovative drone technology and its applications in agriculture and conservation.

Congratulations to this year's East Piedmont Area award recipients from Lancaster County:

🏆 Outstanding Conservation District: Lancaster Soil and Water Conservation District
🏆 Outstanding Conservation District Commissioner: Gary Moore
🏆 Watershed Director of the Year: Ashli Young

Thank you to Newberry SWCD for hosting a successful meeting and to all who continue to support conservation efforts across the East Piedmont Area. Together, we are strengthening conservation partnerships and protecting South Carolina's natural resources for future generations.

Spooky Kids Nature Club was a success! Great job Madelyn!

The kids learned all about spider anatomy and discovered that these web-spinning builders have a pretty wild setup:

• 👀 Eight Simple Eyes – Perfect for spotting spooky shadows!

• 🧠 Cephalothorax – The ultimate head-and-chest combo where the legs and jaws connect.

• 📦 Abdomen – The back section holding all the magic machinery.

• 🥢 Pedipalps – The mini "feeler" arms near the mouth used to sense the world.

• 🦷 Chelicerae & Fangs – The definitive coolest (and spookiest) feature of the day!

• 🕸️ Spinnerets – The built-in silk nozzles at the back that weave those gorgeous, ghostly webs.

Turns out, these little creatures are major garden superheroes, not monsters! 🦸‍♂️🕷️

🌾 What a wonderful evening at our Flour Milling Class! 🌾

We were so grateful to welcome more than 60 adults for an evening filled with learning, fellowship, and meaningful conversation. There is something special about gathering together, sharing knowledge, and connecting with others.

A heartfelt thank you to Tori Hinson and Greta Hinson for their excellent presentation. Their enthusiasm, knowledge, and willingness to share made the class both informative and inspiring.

Participants learned about the health benefits of using freshly milled flour, including how milling grains at home helps preserve nutrients and flavor that can be lost during commercial processing. One of the highlights of the evening was sampling delicious muffins and rolls made with fresh-milled flour, giving everyone the opportunity to taste the difference firsthand.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening so enjoyable. We look forward to learning, sharing, and growing together again soon! 🌾🍞❤️

For those interested in purchasing fresh grains, flour, and baking products, you can find and join a local Bread Beckers Co-op here: https://www.breadbeckerscoop.com/register
