🔥 Today marks the end of Fire Prevention Week and we are once again reminding you to Charge into Fire Safety. 🔥

🔋Safe charging means making smart choices every time to plug in. Every day charging habits can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires. SAFE CHARGING IS A SUPERPOWER!

Follow these tips from the National Fire Protection Association to help make YOU a charging superhero:

✅ Cheap charger? Don't chance it. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the chance of fire. Cheap or off-brand chargers may not meet important safety standards.

✅ Fully charged? Time to unplug. Leaving a device plugged in can increase heat and stress on the battery.

✅ Soft surface? Hard pass. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor. Devices and chargers create heat during normal charging. Soft surfaces like beds, pillows, and couches can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.

✅ Feels hot? Stop using it. Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing noises. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

✅ For tools and rides, charge outside. Charge items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible and do not block exits when charging. These batteries are larger and store more energy. Fires can grow quickly if the battery fails.

🏠 Always remember, working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan can help make a difference in saving your life and the lives of those you love.

Fire safety doesn't end here. Practice safety today and every day!

Today is World Mental Health Day. Mental health isn’t just mania, psychosis, schizophrenia, OCD, etc. Mental health is anxiety, depression, panic disorder. All of these mental health diagnoses are no different than being diagnosed with diabetes, lupus, or cancer. They are real. They are treatable.

If you suffer from poor mental health, there are resources available to you. There is therapy and medication, and if insurance doesn’t cover these things or you don’t have the funds, there are resources available to help. Remember, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

GET MOVING: Spend some time outside. Breathe the fresh air.

EAT BETTER: Fuel your body with good food and stay away from processed foods.

LIMIT CAFFEINE: Caffeine can fuel anxiety. Limit your intake.

STAY HYDRATED: Water fixes lots of things!!

TRY GROUNDING TECHNIQUES: Try breathing exercises such as inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF: Remember, you’ve gotten through 100% of the days before. You’ll get through this.

If you are feeling suicidal, call the su***de hotline at 988 or dial 911. For more resources, check the links in the comments.

Remember, we are all in this together. Reach out to a friend who may be going through tough times, offer a smile to a stranger in the store, and always be kind. You never know what someone is struggling with on the inside. 💚

🧯Today's Fire Prevention Week topic is electric space heater safety! 🔥

Many of us have portable heaters or electric fireplaces in our homes and they are a cost-effective way to heat a small area and keep you comfy cozy during the cold weather months. However, they do pose a fire risk when not used properly.

Be sure to follow these tips to help keep your home safe:

✅ Plug directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip and never run the cord under a rug.

✅ Place on a hard, flat, level surface. Be sure to avoid high traffic areas and try to buy a heater with an automatic shut off in case it tips over.

✅ Keep heater 3 feet from anything flammable including papers, blankets, curtains, beds, toys, and furniture.

✅ Turn off when leaving the room. Never leave your space heater unattended or use while sleeping.

Stay warm and safe this season! Remember, fire prevention starts with YOU!

🧯This week's history tidbit is all about Fire Prevention Week! 🔥

Sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association, Fire Prevention Week began in 1922, and in 1925 President Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire.

The Town Line Volunteer Fire Department has recognized Fire Prevention Week since the beginning and has held many open houses, fire prevention demonstrations at schools, and barbeques to commemorate the week. In 1959, the department started a poster contest for area school children which ran through the mid-1990s.

Our firefighters are proud to continue the tradition of Fire Prevention Week 104 years later and still visit our area school each year and present to groups throughout our community.

Remember, fire safety starts with you! Learn how to be fire safe and teach your children the same. It could save your lives!

🚒 Today was a beautiful day to spend some time with 410 of our PreK through 2nd grade friends at the Alden Primary School talking about fire safety. 🚒

Firefighters DeVries, Hjalmarson, Matynka, and Vertlieb showed students Engine 1 and Truck 6 and told them about the various tools we use. Firefighter Chilelli put on his firefighting gear and air pack to show what a firefighter looks like all dressed up (and to not be afraid.)

Firefighters Broska and Schlicht presented to students inside reviewing topics such as smoke and CO alarms, evacuation plans, stop drop and roll, dialing 911, and the importance of safely charging their electronic devices. These kiddos were eager to learn and participate, and they asked some really great questions!

A big thanks to the teachers and staff for letting us visit again this year!

🔥 Today's Fire Prevention Week tip is fire extinguishers and how to use them. 🔥

Fire extinguishers are crucial for home safety because they are capable of preventing small fires from becoming catastrophic events. In fact, 60% of homes do not have a fire extinguisher.

✅ Have at least one multi-purpose extinguisher in your kitchen, garage, workshop, and anywhere else a small, contained fire could break out.
✅ Only use an extinguisher on small, contained fires.
✅ Ensure everyone is evacuated and the fire department is called.
✅ Never fight a fire that is producing heavy smoke or blocking your exit.
✅ When in doubt, evacuate immediately!!

Remember PASS when using an extinguisher.

P - Pull the pin
A - Aim at the base of the fire
S - Squeeze the handle
S - Sweep side to side

Check back all week when we will share another helpful tip to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

🔥Today's Fire Prevention Week topic is - Smoke Alarms Save Lives🔥

Did you know that roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen when there are no working smoke alarms? The following tips can help make sure your home is fire safe.

✅Install smoke alarms on each floor of your home and in every bedroom
✅Install smoke alarms on the ceiling or high on the wall
✅Keep smoke alarms 10 feet from the stove to help reduce false alarms.

In order to be sure your smoke alarm is working properly:
ONCE A MONTH - Test alarms using the test button
ONCE A YEAR - Change the batteries in your smoke alarm if the alarm uses standard batteries
ONCE A DECADE - Replace the smoke detector with a new one

🧯STAY SAFE - STAY ALARMED. Help ensure YOUR safety in the event of a fire.

Check back tomorrow and all week when we share another helpful tip to help keep you and your loved ones safe.
