During National Recovery Month, here’s a simple reminder: people are more than a diagnosis.

Say “person with a substance use disorder,” not “addict.”

That is more than a wording change. Labels can create shame and make it harder for someone to ask for help. Person-first language keeps the focus where it belongs: on the person, their dignity, and their ability to recover.

On September 17, community advocates, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and local leaders gathered in Parkersburg to identify gaps between behavioral health and the criminal justice system: and to build practical pathways to care.

One message stood out: services may exist, but people often do not know how to find them when they need help most.

That same gap affects communities across Southeast Ohio. During National Recovery Month, we are reminded that earlier communication can change what happens next.

This is the problem Smart Bail’s ARC technology is being built to help solve: connecting the justice system, behavioral health providers, and peer-support services sooner, so people are not simply cycled through arrest and jail without access to appropriate support.

There is no single solution. But better coordination is a place to start.
