When a conservationist or soil scientist completes an in-field assessment, one of the factors they look at is compaction of the soil. For samples like this picture, it shows that there is compaction. The main indicator of compaction is the “platy” structure in the top few inches of the soil. Compaction like this is typically caused by management practices and leads to reductions in plant growth, soil organism habitat, and soil organic matter.

A simple solution to combat this issue is to reduce tillage. Fewer passes over the field means less heavy machinery compacting the soil. Switching from deep, intense tillage to a minimum or no-till system helps to keep the soil aggregates stable, and increases water infiltration, plant growth, and overall functionality of the soil.

Photo by Blaine Brakke, 2012. Management induced soil compaction resulting in decreased rooting depth that reduces plant growth, animal habitat, and soil biological activity.
