β WHAT IS CALIFORNIAβS STAR SMOG CHECK PROGRAM? π
Did you know that not all Smog Check stations are STAR certified? If your California DMV registration renewal notice says βSmog Certification Required at a STAR Station,β you must visit a STAR-certified Smog Check station to satisfy that requirement!
π WHAT IS A STAR SMOG CHECK?
Californiaβs STAR Program is administered by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). STAR-certified stations must meet additional performance and inspection-quality standards to help ensure accurate emissions testing.
π WHY DOES MY VEHICLE REQUIRE A STAR SMOG CHECK?
The California DMV directs certain vehicles to STAR-certified stations based on vehicle-related information and emissions risk factors. Being selected does NOT automatically mean your vehicle has a problem!
β
WHATβS THE DIFFERENCE?
βοΈ Regular Smog Check stations can inspect vehicles that arenβt specifically directed to STAR.
βοΈ STAR-certified stations can inspect vehicles that require STAR certification.
βοΈ Both follow Californiaβs applicable emissions testing standards.
βοΈ STAR certification does NOT mean stricter emissions limits for your vehicle!
π BEFORE YOUR SMOG CHECK:
πΉ Check your DMV renewal notice for STAR requirements.
πΉ Avoid disconnecting your battery right before testing, as this may reset emissions readiness monitors.
πΉ Bring your DMV renewal notice if available.
