October is also Riparian Buffer Month!🌲 Fall is the perfect time plant trees as temperatures cool and trees enter dormancy, experiencing less stress and transplant shock when going into the ground.
Riparian buffers play a vital role in filtering pollutants, preventing erosion, reducing flooding, and protecting wildlife.

While out in nature this fall, be sure to keep an eye out for manmade rock dams in local streams. While they may be a fun stream activity, be sure to move the rocks back to their places after the fun is done. Threats of these rock dams can include loss of habitat and passage barriers to sensitive and important aquatic organisms. In addition, streams may face accelerated erosion as water may reroute in a direction that is not natural.

💧Happy World Rivers Day!💧
Today, we’re celebrating the waterways that connect our communities, support wildlife, provide clean water, and shape the places we call home. And this year, we have an extra reason to celebrate here in Lancaster County: the Conestoga River has been named Pennsylvania’s 2026 River of the Year! 🎉🏆The river’s story is one of resilience and recovery. Once heavily impacted by pollution, this 61-mile river has become a powerful example of what can happen when communities, farmers, conservation organizations, municipalities, and dedicated individuals work together to protect and restore our waterways. Conestoga River of the Year recognition isn’t just an award—it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much we can accomplish together. So today, take a moment to appreciate your local river. Get outside. Explore it. Learn about it. And help protect it.

🌱🌾 BMP OF THE MONTH 🌾🌱
The BMP of the month for September is Forage Harvest Management! Forage harvest management is the timely removal of forages like hay, green-chop, or ensilage. Forage harvest management applies to fields where forage is machine harvested, not grazed. The removal of forage by machine removes excess nutrients from the soil when the forage is taken off. Some benefits of forage harvest management are:
🌾Optimize quantity and quality of forage while promoting plant regrowth
🌱Manage composition of species
🌾Reduce excess nutrients in the soil
🌱Optimize stability of soil and microbial activity
🌾Reduce compaction of the soil structure
Forage harvest management is a great BMP because it positively impacts soils and produces forage to feed livestock!
