The original Charles A. Smith Memorial Hall is 100 years old! It was completed on September 17, 1926 and the formal dedication to the residents of Forked River was October 22, 1926. Charles A. Smith, was a prominent resident and local philanthropist, he left $15,000 in trust to his lawyer, George W. Rurode, to build a community hall in his memory, it was to be used for social and educational purposes. Rurode created the Charles A. Smith Memorial Association of Forked River in 1924, and together they purchased the property, managed and oversaw the construction of the building, which stands proudly on the corner of Rt. 9 and Lacey Rd. Vernon Sutton was the builder. The building's plans included 2 stories with a kitchen and bathrooms on the first floor, a billiard room, library and cloak room. The second floor has a hardwood dance floor and a stage. In 1973, the first floor was expanded, making larger main meeting room. The building remains structurally sound and is at risk of demolition as the Township continues to fight for a developer to build a QuikCheck! This landmark has been the center of Lacey for 100 years and should continue to do so as a cultural center for years to come. Lets celebrate the centennial anniversary and SAVE THE CHARLES A. SMITH MEMORIAL HALL!
