Name It, Claim It: Learning in Action at LHS!
LHS Principal Dr. Alan Penrose is giving staff a chance to virtually step into one another’s classrooms through “Name It, Claim It,” a series highlighting the lessons, projects, and learning opportunities happening throughout Lansing High School.
This week’s feature takes us into **Lorie Ketter’s Spanish II class**, where students are exploring Latin American legends while strengthening their Spanish language skills through reading, writing, and creativity!
Mrs. Ketter shares what was happening:
“¡Buenos días!
In my Spanish II class, we learned about three different Latin American legends: El Gritón (The Yeller/Shouter), El Silbón (The Whistler), and El Cucuy (the Latin American Boogeyman).
After reading, watching, or listening to three different versions of the El Cucuy legend, students worked with partners on a mini project to retell one of the versions. Students illustrated what they imagined El Cucuy looked like based on the storybook version and then rewrote the legend in their own words in Spanish.
In the storybook version, El Cucuy has one giant red ear so he can hear misbehaving children. The legend tells of two sisters who are taken to his cave until a shepherd eventually rescues them and returns them home to their family.”
Through this project, students had the opportunity to **practice Spanish reading comprehension, writing, and storytelling while exploring Latin American folklore and culture**. Their creative illustrations and written retellings demonstrate how language learning can bring stories and traditions to life!
Thank you to Mrs. Ketter for giving us a look inside her classroom and showing another way our LHS students are learning in action!
