🎶🎨 Celebrating the art, culture, and creativity that make our community so special!

The African American Arts and Music Festival happens every year during ArtPrize while celebrating heritage, and bringing community together.

We were proud to recognize the festival with a special tribute honoring the incredible work they do to uplift Black voices, celebrate culture, and create opportunities for connection right here in Grand Rapids. 💙

Thank you to the AAAMF board, its organizers, and everyone who continues to make this celebration possible. Your work makes a difference in our community!

Last week Governor Whitmer held the official bill signing for our new Low Income Housing Tax Credits program!

I’m proud to sponsor HB 5806 that was a part of the package.

This investment will help build new housing for families with lower incomes, and update existing housing for those families. 🏡💙

Joining Governor Whitmer for these photos was a chance to celebrate that progress. But I know how many people are still struggling to find a home they can afford. Our work is far from over, and I’ll keep pushing for the housing opportunities our communities need.

Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honor the history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities here in West Michigan and across the country.

Long before Grand Rapids became the city we know today, this land was home to the Anishinaabek, including the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi peoples. The Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians have deep roots in our community, and their history, traditions, and contributions remain an important part of West Michigan.

As we recognize this day, we also celebrate the Indigenous communities who continue to shape our region and remind ourselves of the importance of preserving their history, uplifting their voices, and respecting their rights.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

And that’s a wrap on ArtPrize 2026! 🎨✨

What an incredible few weeks celebrating creativity, community, and the talented artists who help make Grand Rapids such a special place!

From the incredible artwork throughout downtown to the local artists and businesses who brought SouthPrize to life in our Southtown neighborhoods, it was wonderful to see our community come together to celebrate the arts. (thanks to the local leaders for making it happen!)

A huge thank you to the artists, organizers, volunteers, local businesses, and everyone who helped make this year’s ArtPrize and SouthPrize possible. And congratulations to all of this year’s winners! 👏🏾

ArtPrize may be over for the year, but the creativity and talent in our community are worth celebrating all year long! 💙

It always feels good to be back at my alma mater, especially when Spartans are coming together to help shape Michigan’s future. 💚🤍

Thank you to Spartan Housing Alliance and Abundant Housing Michigan for bringing us together for a thoughtful conversation about housing. We talked about the challenges students and young people face finding a place they can afford, how the Housing Readiness Package could help create more housing options, and how students can make their voices heard.

You should be able to build a future here in Michigan and find a home in the community you love. That’s why this work matters to me, and why hearing directly from the young people navigating these challenges is so important.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, asked questions, and shared your perspective. Keep speaking up and staying involved. Your voice belongs in these conversations! Go Green! 💚

Had a great time stopping by the newly renovated Seidman Boys & Girls Club right here in District 82! 💙

I got to check out the new space and sit down with the team to talk about their work, their priorities, and how we can continue supporting the young people and families they serve.

Our kids deserve spaces where they feel safe, supported, and encouraged to grow, and I’m grateful for the work the Boys & Girls Clubs of Grand Rapids does every day to make that possible!

Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference is always a time to convene and connect. I'm thankful for the relationships that are built, but also the energy and ideas I bring home with me each year! We are in a crucial moment in time and I hope we will all be able to look back and say “I rolled up my sleeves and got to work".

The deadline to file your 2026 Home Heating Credit Claim is this Wednesday, September 30. You can submit Form MI-1040CR-7 online or by mail, even if you aren’t required to file a Michigan income tax return.

As the colder months approach, I want to make sure our neighbors know about Michigan’s Home Heating Credit. If you’re a Michigan homeowner or renter, you may qualify for help with heating costs.

Check your eligibility and find the form at Michigan.gov/HeatingAssistance
