Jocelyn Benson–John James debate takeaways: First, imagine having to listen to her liar-liar-rapid-fire speeches for eight years 🤯. It literally sounded like her voice was in fast-forward mode.

🤦‍♀️ Benson told the audience to visit the campaign-finance website to review her filings—if only the website she created and oversaw actually worked. The Legislature, including members of her own party, voted to remove her duties because the system was so poorly managed.

🤦‍♀️ Michigan Democrats eliminated local control over large-scale industrial energy projects. Benson blamed John James, saying, “John James removed local control.” FACT: Bensons running mate, Sen. Winnie Brinks, was responsible for pushing that law (PA 233) through our senate chamber.

🤦‍♀️ Benson said she is going to “take on natural disasters before they occur.” On top of being the most absurd comment, she means more windmills and solar panels are coming, and your right to local control isn’t coming back.

There was no opening-day hunt for me yesterday. After a week of no voting in the Senate, we were told to return to Lansing yesterday for votes. Some of us suspected a temporary gas-tax-relief bill—like those enacted in our neighboring states of Ohio and Indiana-might come up for a vote, but that didn't happen.

To be clear, no one has suggested cutting off road funding for a temporary gas tax cut. Road funding could be backfilled from the General Fund or the Rainy Day Fund-those are just two options.

The Rainy Day Fund has been tapped for much less pressing needs before. Investing those reserves in our economy-by supporting farmers, truckers, and workers who travel-would be an appropriate use. Senate Democrats refused to advance a bill that would give some relief to working families.

I’ve spent the day traveling hundreds of miles across our district in a (diesel) truck, seeing harvest season unfold around us.

I’m thinking about the farmers working hard to bring in their crops and the truckers transporting the goods that keep our communities supplied—and all the folks who travel for their jobs.

Every tax adds another burden, and families and businesses feel the impact. With fuel prices already putting pressure on everyone, Governor Whitmer should be proposing a temporary gas and diesel tax holiday, just like she did under the Biden administration. The state collects billions in other taxes—surely, we can provide temporary relief when people need it most!

Yesterday, I was in Lansing for several committee hearings. Today, I was back in the district for meetings and a terrific groundbreaking ceremony at Treetops Resort in Ga***rd. I was honored to take part in this event, which marks the beginning of a new residential development at the golf course.

Northern Michigan welcomes everyone and encourages responsible growth—but not politicians driven by ego and ideology or outsider corporations putting profit before our heritage and communities!

To the people I represent: I hear your frustration, and I’m standing with you. I’ll continue fighting for Northern Michigan while I’m in Lansing, but we need you to stay strong, stay involved, and keep up the fight right here at home. We know who we are, where we come from, and what we value. No amount of corporate power or political spin can uproot us or override the will of the people!!! 🇺🇸💪🇺🇸
