Since I’ve been in office I’ve worked to help diverse groups. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know and working beside Michigan FFA Association and the Agricultural leaders and students who will lead our second largest industry into the future.

The other night I was invited to the Michigan Association of Agriscience Annual Banquet and was given an Honorary Membership Award.

Kevin Nugent introduced me and I’ve rarely had nicer words said. The intro ended with, “Her leadership has resulted in tangible lasting benefits that will continue to serve Michigan students for generations. The Michigan FFA Association and Michigan agriculture education community have rarely had a stronger advocate than Angela Witwer which makes her deserving of Honorary Membership.”

I can’t express my gratitude for all of the experiences in agriculture.

We had another busy week. We had students from Maplewood, New Covenant Christian and St. Gerard visit the Capitol. I try to meet all our classrooms and give them the opportunity to walk onto the House of Representatives floor. I love the photos of the kids on the glass floor looking at the stars. The stars in the dome represent the endless opportunities in Michigan. I was even more excited to have my youngest granddaughter in the last classroom.

Congratulations to our September Teacher of the Month winner, Angela Marin! Angela teaches 5th grade at Charlotte Upper Elementary.

Angela is being recognized for her efforts in the classroom to make learning fun and for her kind and funny personality. Additionally, Angela applied for and won a grant last year to get a Cricut and heat press for her students to learn graphing, drafting, measuring, and other math and teamwork skills. On Saturday, I participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Eaton Rapids Area District Library. I presented a tribute from me, State Senator Sarah Anthony and the Governor to mark their 150 years in Eaton Rapids. The library worked hard and invested $270,000 to do a refresh of the building with new carpet, paint, and some new seating.

Libraries are great gathering places and this one is beautiful and in the heart of downtown. Come and visit and take a look at the hard work from the community.

It was my honor to introduce and speak to the Michigan Indian Week resolution to honor Michigan’s twelve federally recognized tribes and encourage all Michiganders to learn more about their rich cultures and significant contributions. As we reflect on our shared history, this week is also about recommitting to working in partnership with tribal nations to improve the lives of our shared citizens and take care of our Great Lakes state.

I was joined on the floor with Jamie Stuck, tribal legislative liaison in the Michigan Office of the Tribal Legislative Liaison, and Yvonne Fronczak, our constituent services staffer and a resident of the 76th House District who is a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. Yvonne is my childhood friend and our office has loved learning the tribal traditions from her.
