đź’ś PURPLE THURSDAY: STANDING WITH SURVIVORS, HOLDING OFFENDERS ACCOUNTABLE

Today, October 15, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office recognizes Purple Thursday as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and reaffirms its commitment to prosecuting offenders, protecting survivors, and supporting crime victims every day of the year.

“Wearing purple is a visible sign of support for survivors, but our commitment extends far beyond one day,” said Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “My office works every day to hold domestic violence offenders accountable, pursue justice for victims, and ensure survivors have access to the resources and support they need.”

Abuse is not a private matter. It must never be excused or minimized.

The Prosecutor’s Office works with law enforcement, victim advocates, Care House, and Turning Point to pursue justice and connect survivors with critical services. Its Crime Victim Rights Unit provides guidance, advocacy, court-related assistance, and support to help victims navigate the criminal justice system with dignity.

In April, the unit also hosted a free Crime Victim Resource Symposium to connect survivors, families, and community members with information about victims’ rights and available resources.

đź’ś If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available.

📞 Turning Point 24-hour crisis line: 586-463-6990

🚨 If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Purple Thursday is more than wearing purple. It is a reminder that survivors deserve to be heard, victims deserve support, and offenders must be held accountable.

On Purple Thursday, I join communities across the country in showing support for survivors of domestic violence and the professionals who help them pursue safety. Awareness matters most when it connects people to trustworthy help.

Save the National Domestic Violence Hotline number, 800-799-SAFE, in a place where it can be found when needed. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. No one should have to navigate abuse without support.

A teen driver's friends can make the trip safer by acting as responsible passengers. I encourage young passengers to buckle up, keep the music at a reasonable level, avoid horseplay, and never pressure the driver to speed or take a risk.

If navigation is needed, one passenger can handle it so the driver keeps eyes on the road. A good friend helps the driver make the safe choice, even when it is not the popular one.

Mount Clemens, Mich. – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that 41-year-old Kurtis Fooks, of Warren, Michigan, was bound over on felony counts stemming from an incident at a gas station in Mount Clemens.

It is alleged that on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Fooks entered the victim’s vehicle through the passenger door while the victim was pumping gas at a station near Market Street and northbound Gratiot Avenue. When the victim entered the vehicle and ordered Fooks to get out, Fooks allegedly pointed a knife at him while rummaging through the vehicle. Fooks then allegedly took a bottle of Febreze and walked away. When responding law enforcement officers ordered Fooks to stop, he allegedly fled on foot before officers detained him.

On Thursday, October 8, 2026, Fooks’ Preliminary Exam was held before Judge Sebastian Lucido of the 41-B District Court in Clinton Township, Michigan. At the conclusion of the Exam, Judge Lucido bound Fooks over on the following charges:
• Robbery – Armed, punishable by any term of years up to life
• Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Felonious Assault), a 4-year felony
• Police Officer – Assault/Resist/Obstruct, a 2-year felony.

Fooks also has a Habitual Offender – Second Offense Notice, an aggravating sentencing factor.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Christopher J. Petrides conducted the Exam on behalf of the People.

“The allegations in this case describe a frightening encounter that could have escalated into something far more dangerous. This case serves as a reminder to remain alert and keep your vehicle doors locked, even when stopping for gas,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

Fooks will be arraigned before Judge Michael E. Servitto of the Macomb County Circuit Court on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 1:30.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office represents the People. We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All individuals who are accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Reusing one password across several accounts allows a single breach to become a chain reaction. I recommend using a reputable password manager to create and store long, unique passwords.

Protect the manager itself with a strong master password and multifactor authentication. If an account reports suspicious access, change that password and check whether the same credentials were used anywhere else. Strong digital habits help protect personal information, finances, and the people connected to your accounts.
