In Lansing, I’m taking on some of the toughest challenges facing Michiganders. At the forefront are affordability challenges, with healthcare as a top priority.

That’s why I recently introduced Senate Bill 1152, in partnership with State Representative Mai Xiong, which would establish a Basic Health Plan in Michigan. The Basic Health Plan is a common-sense solution that would provide working-class Michiganders who do not have access to employer-sponsored health care plans and make too much to qualify for Medicaid with a more affordable alternative to marketplace plans.

On Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples across Michigan and our nation.

Michigan is home to 12 federally recognized tribal nations, whose leadership, traditions, and stewardship continue to shape our state today.

Today, we celebrate the resilience of Indigenous peoples, recognize the importance of tribal sovereignty, and recommit ourselves to learning from and partnering with tribal nations as we work toward a stronger future for Michigan.

One of my family's favorite fall traditions is the Fall Harvest Festival at Applewood. We had a great time there over the weekend and, as always, it was a reminder of the tremendous impact C.S. and Ruth Mott's generosity continues to have on our community.

If you missed the festival this year, don't worry. You can still experience the beauty of Applewood in the fall through October 31.

ICYMI: The Michigan Senate passed my bill - SB 791 - to rename a portion of I-475 in honor of Flint's St. John Street neighborhood. Thanks to ABC12 News for sharing the story.

The Michigan Senate approved a bill that would designate part of I-475 as a memorial highway honoring Flint's former St. John Street neighborhood.

Lowering costs and standing up for workers go hand in hand.

That's why Senate Democrats once again passed a package of bills to help working families, strengthen protections, and restore earned retirement benefits for Michigan's correction, conservation, and motor carrier officers. Now it's time for the House to stop the delays and act.

Proud to see my bill, SB 791, pass the Senate, renaming part of I-475 as the St. John Street Community Memorial Highway. This designation honors the Black and immigrant families, businesses, churches, and culture that made St. John Street a cornerstone of Flint and ensures that history is never forgotten.

Michiganders putting in a hard day's work should be able to support their families. Today, Senator Sean McCann and I stood alongside SEIU members as we introduced legislation to make sure that State law no longer prevents local governments from lifting up wage and work standards for workers in their communities. As a former SEIU member and Chair of the Michigan Senate Labor Committee, I'm proud to stand up for workers and the families that are the backbone of our economy.
