๐ OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH ๐
Abuse is not always physical. Sometimes, it looks like control disguised as love, isolation from friends and family, constant criticism, financial control, intimidation, or being made to feel like everything is your fault.
The Power and Control Wheel highlights the many ways abuse can show up in a relationship. These behaviors are often used to gain power and control over another person, and recognizing them is an important step toward breaking the cycle.
๐ฉ Abuse can look like:
๐ Emotional abuse and manipulation
๐ Controlling finances or access to money
๐ Isolating someone from loved ones
๐ Threats, intimidation, or coercion
๐ Using children to manipulate or control
๐ Minimizing abuse, shifting blame, or gaslighting
Remember: Love should never require fear, control, or the loss of your independence. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, valued, and supported in their relationships.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please know that you are not alone. Listen without judgment, offer support, and help connect them with safe resources when they are ready. Leaving an abusive relationship can be complicated and dangerous, so patience, compassion, and safety planning matter.
๐ Letโs break the silence, recognize the signs, support survivors, and remind one another that healthy relationships are built on respectโnot power and control.
