When I was mulling a run for office, Mayor Dave Hollister was the first person I called for counsel. I grew up thinking of the Mayor as a giant and a model to aspire to for public service. As I told the Lansing State Journal, I will always remember him as Lansing’s biggest cheerleader and a big supporter for generations of elected officials and public servants.

Mayor Hollister left our community better than he found it, and we are all better off because of his service.

The Lansing City Council will honor his legacy with a resolution at the Monday, Sept. 28, council session.

My thoughts are with Christine and the entire Hollister family as they mourn the loss of one of Lansing's best.

After weeks of hearings, discussion, and consideration, the City Council unanimously adopted the 2026-2027 budget for the City of Lansing.

This budget puts more officers on the streets by adding detention staff to the jail, funds six additional police positions through state revenue sharing and the COPS grant, and adds one firefighter to every shift. It invests $1.5 million in sidewalk repairs, expands road paving, and continues the infrastructure work separating our combined sewers to protect Lansing’s rivers. On violence prevention, it funds Advance Peace at $325,000, directs $100,000 to the Lansing Empowerment Network, and keeps the Violence Prevention Coordinator in place. And it strengthens day-to-day services — two more 311 call center staff, two additional Code Compliance officers, and two new Solid Waste operators to improve trash and recycling collection.

The budget that I introduced earlier this year addresses priorities for Lansing residents, including increased funding for local roads and sidewalks, additional police officers and fire fighters, code enforcement and neighborhoods, housing and homelessness resources, and assisting small businesses. And I am proud that it is balanced and fiscally responsible. I want to thank the City Council for their review and due diligence on the budget and their overwhelming support for the plan I presented to them. I am excited for the investments we continue to make together in Lansing for the next fiscal year, starting on July 1.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this election and helped supported the Ingham Intermediate School District Special Education Facilities Bond.

With 56% of voters voting yes, our community made a meaningful investment in safe, accessible, and modern learning environments for students across Lansing and Ingham County.

The biggest winners are the children and families who will benefit from these improved spaces for years to come.

It’s about investing in facilities that meet students where they are and support every learner.

This morning we stopped in to PetalPop Cafe for breakfast. 10/10 would recommend. Hard to choose which was my favorite, but the chicken and waffles were top tier.

Today we received a communication from leadership at Deep Green formally withdrawing the Application for Zoning Amendment Z-3-2026; 220 S Larch St. and 3 adjoining parcels on E. Kalamazoo St. and S. Cedar St., Conditional Rezoning from “DT-3” to Urban Core to “IND-1” Industrial (PEND-4415), which is Item 29 on the Agenda for tonight’s Meeting of Lansing City Council.

As a result, the land sale and conditional rezone votes will not take place at tonight’s Committee of the Whole or City Council meetings.

Given the heightened public awareness on this topic, I wanted to share that here for those interested in tonight’s meetings.

What this means: the data center proposal downtown will not move forward.

Ballots for the May 5th special election are starting to arrive in mailboxes across our region, and there's an important bond proposal I'm proud to support.

If approved, this bond would generate nearly $100 million specifically for special education facilities in our area. Key among the changes is a completely new building for the Beekman Center in South Lansing.

Beekman has long been an asset to our students with complex learning, behavioral, physical, or medical needs, but it's now beyond its useful life. This bond would fund a brand new replacement facility on that same site, plus renovations at Heartwood School, so that both locations can offer students safe, accessible, and engaging learning environments.

Every kid deserves quality educational facilities. That's why I'm voting yes on this one and hope you will too.
