Great places help great small businesses thrive. Walkable corridors, attractive streetscapes, and inviting public spaces strengthen local business districts by bringing more people downtown and encouraging them to explore, shop, and stay longer.

Elk Rapids is a standout example. Supported by an MEDC Revitalization and Placemaking grant, the Ames Street Corridor project has transformed a key gateway into a more welcoming, pedestrian-friendly connection to downtown—creating the kind of environment where small businesses can grow.

Our team recently visited Elk Rapids on a roadshow to see the completed project and connect with local entrepreneurs. We stopped by Masala Magic , Bos W**e, and Ethanology Distillation to hear firsthand how improvements to the corridor are helping bring more activity and energy to the area.

Investing in vibrant places isn’t just about infrastructure—it’s about supporting the small businesses that make Michigan communities unique and resilient.

It's and today we are celebrating four Michigan Main Street communities milestone anniversaries in the program! Adrian, Coldwater, Old Town Lansing and Rogers City are celebrating designation anniversaries this year and we are highlighting their accomplishments through our partnership!

Since 2003, Michigan Main Street (MMS) has assisted communities across Michigan interested in revitalizing and preserving their historic traditional downtowns or commercial districts. We currently have 24 designated communities establishing the Main Street Four Points (Economic Vitality, Design, Organization, and Promotion) as a framework for their downtown revitalization strategy. In 2026, Adrian, Coldwater and Rogers City are celebrating five years in the program, and Old Town Lansing is celebrating 20 years!

The work has been transformational in these communities and the proof is in the numbers:
🌟Downtown Adrian welcomed 22 new businesses, eight façade/building rehabilitations, 4,483 volunteer hours and $225,000 in private investment since becoming an MMS community and received a Match on Main grant in 2026 to support Mandy Makes N’ Bakes!
🌟Downtown Coldwater welcomed 20 new businesses, 32 façade/building rehabilitations, 1,970 volunteer hours and over $2.8 million in private investment since becoming an MMS community and received a Main Street Vibrancy program grant in June 2025 to support the installation of murals and sculptures as part of its public art program.
🌟Downtown Rogers City welcomed 13 new businesses, 18 façade/building rehabilitations, 8,526 volunteer hours and over $497,000 in private investment since becoming an MMS community and through events, activities and public art such as the MEDC-supported Murals on Main Festival, Rogers City is giving people more reasons to enjoy both downtown and Lake Huron
🌟Old Town Lansing welcomed 131 new businesses, 135 façade/building rehabilitations, 64,796 volunteer hours and over $16 million in private investment since becoming an MMS community and has flipped the 95% vacancy rate to an over-95% retail occupancy rate, featuring eclectic boutiques and restaurants.

Cheers to each of these communities and we are so excited to see the momentum continue!

Our Regional Development team attended this year’s Detroit Homecoming, a signature event that brings together leaders, partners, and Detroit expats who continue to champion the city’s growth and opportunity. This year’s program offered an exciting new backdrop at Detroit’s newest downtown attraction, Cosm Detroit.

For MEDC’s community development work, events like Homecoming offer fresh insights and meaningful connections. Hearing directly from stakeholders and thought leaders help us stay tuned into the conversations driving Detroit’s economic and neighborhood momentum, strengthening how we support projects and collaborate across Detroit and Southeast Michigan.

We’re grateful to the organizers and participants for creating such an engaging platform that spotlights Detroit’s progress and builds energy around the city’s future.

🏗️ Another exciting investment in Downtown Cheboygan!

MEDC was proud to join community partners to celebrate the transformation of a long vacant and underutilized downtown property into new commercial space and two residential units.

This project is about more than one building. It brings new life and housing density to Main Street, eliminates blight, preserves historic character, and creates more opportunities for people to live, work, shop, and invest downtown.

The redevelopment was supported by MEDC through a Revitalization and Placemaking grant along with State Tax Capture, helping make this challenging redevelopment possible.

Congratulations to the development team, the City of Cheboygan, and all of the partners who helped bring this property back to life. We’re excited to see the continued momentum in Downtown Cheboygan!

Happy ! Here is a recap of the Main Street Team's recent travels in the field! Celebrating two decades of growth while opening the door to new opportunities!

Earlier this month, we had the incredible privilege of taking a single trip that bridged Michigan Main Street’s rich history and bright future.

First, we are thrilled to officially welcome our newest community, Downtown Ga***rd, into the Michigan Main Street program! Joining the network marks the start of an exciting new chapter filled with fresh energy, economic growth, and community-led revitalization. We couldn't be more thrilled to support them as they begin building their own legacy.

This year marks 20 years of Old Town Lansing as a designated Main Street community—two decades of heart, hustle, and incredible transformation that have made its commercial district a true destination. On top of that, we celebrated 30 years of Old Town's organization standing strong as a champion for the neighborhood. Seeing 30 years of vision and 20 years of Main Street impact up close is a powerful reminder of what long-term dedication makes possible.

From 20 years of proven impact to day one of brand-new possibilities, downtowns across Michigan prove that when communities come together, great things happen.

Join us in toasting to 20 years of success—and giving a warm Michigan Main Street welcome to our newest member!

Team MEDC joined our partners, State Senator Jeff Irwin, Michigan State Housing Development Authority Executive Director Amy Hovey, and Community Leaders to celebrate the groundbreaking of The Adeline, an exciting new addition to downtown Ann Arbor!

At the MEDC, our Make It in Michigan strategy is focused on investing in our people, revitalizing our places, and creating greater opportunity for Michiganders. The Adeline is a great example of that work in action. Creating new housing, strengthening connections to transportation and services, and helping more people live closer to where they work and build their lives.

The MEDC is proud to support this transformational project through nearly $30 million in Transformational Brownfield Plan financing.

Congratulations to everyone who helped get this project to this point. We’re excited to watch The Adeline take shape and see the impact it will have on downtown Ann Arbor and the community for years to come!
